It's harsh to suggest overlooking or even supporting some heinous acts in the name of national interest, but that's exactly how nations should act. It's a slippery slope, to be sure, but leaders are elected/elevated to navigate slippery slopes, and national interest is king.

Ala la US version, which embraces hypocrisy.

What's your point? Name one nation that isn't hypocritical from time to time? I for one am glad US puts her national interests first and foremost, and I suspect you feel the same for whatever you're from.

Every nation put its own interest first, but China is not as hypocritical as the US.

lol, atrocities. The people there were shot in the back of the head and put in the mass graves of hundreds bodies the normal Russian way that they identified them so fast or what?

Explain, I need a forensic team there at least before calling names!

Mr Janiz is reminding us that such horrible atrocities require at the very least a competent forensics team, not a "flip" Russian accusation against the Ukrainians, particularly since the Russians are also suspects in this horrible crime.

"I need a forensic team there at least before calling names"=====means he would NOT assign guilt without a full forensics report. I concur 100%, and no thinking man would take this response by the Russians as the truth without forensic evidence to substantiate that response. No doubt this will be, and should be fully investigated, charges will be filed if there are war crimes, as well they should be.

Putin is so evil he keeps trying to frame peace loving democratic Ukraine for acts committed by Putin's 30,000 paratroopers and 1,000 T-90 tanks!!

Nope, Putin isn't "evil," nor does he lie for the sake of lying. He is, as Robert Kaplan puts it, "an average Russian autocrat" who pursues national interests as he see them. IMHO, US/NATO alliance should stop demonizing Putin, and accept he's trying to do what he believes best for Russia. The question for the alliance is what to do about it. If US/NATO is serious about keeping Russia weak, then using half-measures wouldn't get the job done. And if the alliance isn't willing to pay the high price of successfully expanding NATO into Ukraine, then it's better off negotiating with Putin and cut the best deal possible. Sad thing is, with Obama in the White House, the alliance probably wouldn't do either.

I was so touched by this sincere confession that I actually cried. I'm sure all of us in this chat thread (100% right?) know that western media has been reporting in a completely biased manner on the Ukraine civil war.

And now we have one of the guilty sinners making a public confession.

Germany’s largest public broadcaster admits ‘too little Russian interests’ in Ukraine coverage

The chief director of ARD, Germany's largest public TV broadcaster, responded to viewers' criticism and the supervisory committee over its coverage of the Ukraine crisis. He said it conveyed Russian interests “too little” and could question NATO more.

Kai Gniffke, the TV channel's editor-in-chief, published a statement on his blog on Tuesday, stating: “Maybe we have conveyed too little of Russian interests to the German viewers. We could possibly have examined the position of NATO even more critically.”

Speaking on the war in Syria and Iraq, as well as the Islamic State, Gniffke said “it is only now that the powder fume over Ukraine has shred away.” He added that “mainstream news issues” have “too easily” diverted the attention of editors.

ARD's comment has long been awaited, as the Advisory Council voiced its concerns over the “biased” Ukraine coverage at a meeting on June 24. But the leaked document was made public only three months later, revealed by online magazine Telepolis.

One of the main concerns, presented by a group of nine advisers, was that the channel’s talk shows “had a tendency to narrate against Russia and the Russian position.” The reasoning for the concern was not only the reports of ordinary viewers, but also a thorough analysis of several ARD reports on the developments in Ukraine, starting from the end of 2013.

Among 10 accusations of the channel, named “boiling points,” the Council voiced concern that the ARD passed over in silence NATO’s intentions of the expansion to the East. It also mentioned that the channel failed to question the legitimacy of the Maidan-imposed authorities in Kiev.

The elected representatives of political parties and associations believed the ARD management ignored the lawfulness of the Crimean referendum, having never investigated it or its history. What is more, mass protests of the Russian-speaking population in Eastern Ukraine, based on their rejection of the coup-imposed government, were apparently underreported.

On Wednesday, ARD TV channel withdrew its May 20 “Daily news” story from its archive, and correspondent Udo Lielischkies corrected his report. It entailed the deaths of two residents of the eastern Ukrainian town of Krasnoarmeysk. The reporter back then put the blame on the “bullets of the new rulers,” referring to the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. However, a review of the facts has shown it was Kiev’s military volunteers, DPA news agency reported.

“We take the mistake very seriously,” Gniffke said. He added that “it is not good, but we do it also to maintain the trust of the viewers.”

Another German TV channel – ZDF, which has also been criticized by its viewers for inaccurate reporting – has lately tried to get off the hook by mocking Western media’s coverage of the Ukrainian crisis.

The black-and-white parody presented a German general in the times of World War I, who had to cope with the recent developments in Ukraine. The massacre in Odessa, the MH17 tragedy, the Russian aid convoy – these were the events he tried to get across to an editor of a fictional newspaper, probably inspired by the work of Orwell’s Ministry of Truth.

Seems many have conveniently forgotten how in the immediate hours of the shooting down of MH17 US and western media were pinning it on Putin and his separatists. Many members here swear by those accusations despite the lack of an official and independent investigation.

Yet some of these members are now talking about the requirement of an independent investigation before war crimes can be pinned on Kiev and their nazi boys. With the provision that it could be Putin who did it and framed poor innocent Kiev.

I like how one side is always guilty and no need for any formal investigation but the other side is innocent until proven guilty.

I really like this kind of soap opera.

I can see your point Stoney, but Mr. Putin is cold, calculating, and indifferent to those innocents who have been caught in the middle of this little adventure, which seems to find his fingerprints all over the "tiller". The deliberate taking of "innocent" life is always evil at its core, whether perpetrated by the good guys, or the bad guys, as to the US/NATO demonizing Mr. Putin, you almost make him sound like an innocent victim, and that is a stretch buddy?
