Donald Trump cancels London visit amid protest fears..

President will not open new US embassy next month, with secretary of state Rex Tillerson likely to take his place..

Donald Trump has cancelled a visit to Britain next month to open the new US embassy in London, amid fears of mass protests.

The president claimed on Twitter that the reason for calling off the trip was his displeasure at Barack Obama having sold the current embassy for “peanuts” and built a replacement for $1bn (£750m). “Bad deal,” he wrote.

But the embassy’s plan to move from Mayfair to Nine Elms in London was first reported in October 2008, when George W Bush was still president.

The London mayor, Sadiq Khan, said Trump had “got the message” that many Londoners staunchly opposed his policies and actions.

“It appears that President Trump got the message from the many Londoners who love and admire America and Americans but find his policies and actions the polar opposite of our city’s values of inclusion, diversity and tolerance,” Khan said on Friday.

“His visit next month would without doubt have been met by mass peaceful protests. This just reinforces what a mistake it was for

to rush and extend an invitation of a state visit in the first place.”

The prime minister invited Trump for a state visit when she became the first world leader to visit the president in the White House a year ago. Activists immediately pledged to stage protests and MPs have said they would not give the president the opportunity to address parliament.

Asked about Trump’s cancellation, a Downing Street spokesman repeated the government’s longstanding position that “an invitation has been extended and accepted, but no date has been set”.

The White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said: “The invitation was made and has been accepted we are still working to finalise a date.”

Instead of a state visit, it had been expected that Trump would make a brief, less formal “working visit” in February to cut the ribbon on the embassy in south-west London, and hold meetings with May. Officials had also been examining plans for the president to meet the Queen without the pomp of a full-blown state banquet.

Government sources suggested Washington had signalled that the secretary of state,

, would instead open the embassy.

Trump confirmed on Twitter late on Thursday night that the trip was off. “Reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts,” only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars,” he wrote just before midnight local time. “Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!”

Citing security and environmental reasons, the US state department agreed to sell the current embassy building in Grosvenor Square to the Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Co, which plans to turn it into a luxury hotel.

, which would have diminished the value because of restrictions on development.

British relations with the president hit a low late last year when May criticised his decision to retweet videos posted by the far-right extremist group Britain First.

Trump responded by tweeting directly to the prime minister that she should focus on tackling domestic terrorism.

The government was so concerned about his decision to share the videos that Britain’s ambassador to Washington, Sir Kim Darroch, took the rare step of raising the issue directly with the White House.

Trump’s ambassador to London, Woody Johnson, subsequently insisted: “The president and the prime minister have a very, very good relationship. I know the president admires and respects the prime minister greatly.”

May’s government has been keen to strike up a close relationship with the Trump administration despite his erratic behaviour, because of Britain’s desire to strike a swift trade deal with the world’s largest economy when it leaves the European Union.

Trump has sparked alarm among diplomats by repeatedly entering into Twitter spats with key public figures, including the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, to whom he recently boasted about the size of the US nuclear arsenal.

The White House has been rocked in recent days by the revelations in an explosive book, Fire and Fury, by the US journalist Michael Wolff, who suggested senior figures in the administration questioned the president’s fitness for office.

Asked about the revelations last weekend, May said she believed they were not serious, and Trump was a man making decisions “in the interests of the United States”.

Trump faced fresh criticism on Thursday night after the Washington Post reported that he had questioned planned changes to immigration rules,

now according to Jane's Brazil-UK move closer to HMS Ocean deal
The Brazilian Navy is negotiating with the United Kingdom to acquire the Royal Navy’s HMS Ocean (L 12) landing platform helicopter, the service’s told Jane’s on 10 January.

Negotiators are working out technical and legal measures towards a potential GBP84.6 million (USD114.4 million) contract, and a signing date is not yet fixed. Brazil hopes to receive the 203.4 m long, 22,000-tonne ship by June, the navy told Jane’s .

Brazil conducted technical surveys in October and November 2017, and the ship was judged to be in good condition. On 29 November 2017 the Brazilian MoD authorised negotiations to begin.

Preliminary technical meetings with the UK Ministry of Defense and Royal Navy were then initiated so the two countries could work out maintenance and docking, crew training, and the sale’s timelimes.

I am with the Donald on this one, best place for Trump is in the USA, not the streets of London! Oh and you can just leave us to our own brand of "insanity", yup we get to vote and as a result we have a Muslim Mayor in London, not sure whether it's better than having a bunch of old men with dyed hair pick the best man for the job like they do in China, but hey it's kinda the democratic thing and it's how we roll in these parts!

BTW not sure what your problem is last time I checked Obama's has had his 2 terms and is done so going off on one every other post about what he did or didn't do whilst in office is not very productive, why not some unicorn and rainbow pieces on how your preferred president is "MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!", some nice photos of roads been built or ships been launched like Timepass' photo montages of Pakistan in the OBOR thread preferably in the US Military News thread. This is after all the UK military news thread not the "how the guy that the majority of YOUR country voted in for 2 terms, who may or may not be born there depending on who you ask, apparently ruined it" thread.

Jura has posted a link in Aircraft Carriers that USMC F-35Bs will begin initial carrier quals aboard the Queen Elizabeth in September, some of the UK F-35Bs have already been cross decking off the USS America, Rafales will begin flying carrier quals off the George W. Bush in April, in preparation for the return of the Charles DeGaul, so 2018 will be an exciting year for carriers in general, as China prepare to launch CV-17, and QE will begin fixed wing Carrier Quals for the first time....

So for those who might question? the UK, France, and US will be conducting joint operations in unprecedented numbers.

Farewell old girl :) there remained 21 again in service in French Navy for Georges Leygues Frigates can't host new NH-90 NFH

The UK retired its last legacy Lynx helicopter with a farewell flypast around the country to mark four decades of service for the classic-variant rotorcraft. The retirement of the AH9A-model AgustaWestland Lynx from the British Army Air Corps (AAC) comes nine years after the variant was introduced into service in 2009, and about 40 years after the first AH1 platforms were delivered in 1978. Introduced as an urgent operational requirement for Afghanistan, the Lynx AH9A was fitted with more powerful CTS800-4N engines to cope with the ‘hot and high’ conditions of that particular theatre (producing 37% more power than the legacy Rolls-Royce Gem engines), and came with modifications to the main gear box, top deck structure, rear fuselage, and to the cockpit. In all, 22 Lynx AH9As were delivered to the AAC between 2009 and 2011 although just eight remained in service at the time of its retirement. One aircraft was lost in an accident in Afghanistan in 2014 with the loss of all five on board, although an investigation found that procedural errors were to blame rather than the platform itself.

Footage released by UK Ministry of Defence show Royal Air Force Typhoon jets flying alongside two long-range Russian fighter jets as they flew above the North Sea near the United Kingdom's airspace on Monday.

The UK Ministry of Defence said that RAF fighter jets from Scotland's Lossiemouth airfield intercepted Russian Tupolev Tu-160s about 48 km (30 miles) from UK airspace and escorted them away.

The Russian Defence Ministry responded in a statement saying: "All flights by Russian aircraft are performed in strict accordance with international rules for using airspace without infringement on any countries' borders."

According to the Russian MoD, the duration of the flight exceeded 13 hours, during which crews of the strategical missile-carriers Tu-160 completed reloading in the air. The statement added that Russian airplanes were accompanied by Eurofighter Typhoon BBC and the F-16 of Belgium Air Military Force.
