Its pretty smart of them. Turkey knows where the future is and instead of wasting its time on manned platforms, it is going full steam ahead on unmanned tech. This choice allows them to get a better Return On Investment for their R&D funds.

Its kinda the same with China. It figured out which technologies would allow it to "leapfrog" the leader, the US, and it heavily invested on them.

The US on the other hand is already deeply invested on "old" technologies and warfare concepts.

As for Turkey, the potential of its MIC is immense. The way I see it, it is gearing up to capture the market of the Muslim countries. Erdogan's strongman style as protector of Muslims, also helps with marketability lol
Turkey has had the advantage of being able to sit on the sidelines and observe military planning and doctrine from both east and west. Now it has learned from those lessons and applied it’s own doctrine to global politics and has used proxy conflicts to reinforce it’s notions on warfare. Once they were able to prove that drones were an undeniable asset they were able to fully support their development, that is why now we see Turkey as one of the major drone manufactures and exporters on the world stage, they’ve fully embraced a new idea of thinking.

Question is how it will work out.
China does both, as does US, but Turkey goes all in unmanned out of necessity.

While for USVs are clearly a way to go, say, unmanned deck based multirole drone fighter... well, screenshot doesn't cost much, but making it happen will be a different thing altogether.

Don't underestimate the power of strongman style.. the U.S. has been cornering the market of East-Asia for the last 80 years because it projects itself as protector of those countries against RU/China

Well the refusal to sell the F35 has put Turkey in a particular situation since their only other alternative was to covert a training aircraft I believe into a carrier fighter. Drones would be perfect for the niche role the Anadolu and future sister ship fulfill. Might as well go with a new radical approach to meet the challenges faced by Turkey.

Turkey is also in the process of getting a fully fledged aircraft carrier by 2030+. It'll most probably carry a manned fighter (TF-X/Hurjet) besides the UCAV's by then.

This is something of a genius move. By removing the manned element, you eliminate a lot of weight and can make the vehicle arbitrarily small. You're no longer dependant on medium/high thrust class engines and can squeeze in fighter like performance with low thrust turbofan engines that Ukraine is willing to sell to you and which your industry can develop with relatively lower risk

True however I doubt the platforms ability in air-to-air engagements as it is an unproven platform. However for air-to-ground engagements it’ll function similarly to how the United States uses its aircraft carriers. We’ll have to see it’s development however the precedent set is exciting and I’m happy to see something new for a change, although my opinion is irrelevant on the development of weapons platforms.

So staking future on first two supersonic(1) stealth(2) aircraft Turkey ever designed being also successful on deck(3). One of them is heavy fighter, other is drone(something that was never done operationally, ever, by anyone).
On top of that, design of both is initiated before the first flight of the Hurjet(3) - first actual Turkish jet aircraft.

This plan is ... boldly ambitious.
