New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

so, there will be more deals like this with Indian companies in the future. I think you should all mentally prepare for that.

It begs the question of what is actually being exchanged here. basically, Indian govt wants 51% ownership so indians are in charge of the JVs. But in reality, China still controls the technology and where to source the parts from. So, you are going to end up building factories where all the tooling and production robots and such come from China. All the metals and many of the simpler parts will be made in India. All the really meaty stuff like software, central computer, battery cells & a lot of chips and such will come from China. SAIC doesn't make those things anyways. This just forces the EVs to use China's supply chain.

So what are you transferring to India when it comes to tech? Well, Chinese auto industry is really good at this thing called setting up automated plant and achieving maximum efficiency. Now since Indian labor is cheap, you will probably not want to set up the most automated plant there. There are other things you can do locally like battery packs and such.

For EV makers like BYD, Geely and xiaomi, what is the percentage of tooling and production robots come from China at this point? If not totally localized yet, then they should avoid the same thing from happening as in the semi-conductor industry.

I would say it's mostly a clickbait-y title, but actually reflective of what you mentioned yourself regarding SAIC.

There is real overcapacity now, especially for ICE cars. It is possible that some of these plants can be replaced with EV manufacturing, but if the production of EVs is more automated, then even retooling these plants will have permanent job losses.

Tooting my own horn for a second, an economist in the article said this

This is what I was saying about India before, a JV factory isn't going to do this.

(Note: I'm not a PhD from Harvard, nor am I a professor at LSE like she is, so my analysis is available for much cheaper)

Eh, I wouldn't call this clickbait. It's a real problem happening right now, and publishing a story on it is legitimate reporting. The fact that it's a natural problem arising from EV strength doesn't make it any less of a problem. Suffering from success is still suffering. Nor can you accuse FT of reporting only on the negative aspect, since they have published many stories about said EV strength.

Dump all those ICE vehicles on Russia. They don't have the infrastructure for EVs there yet anyway. And start working on a strategy to move production to EVs long term. ICE is going to die for cars over the next decade. People need to accept it.

depend factories are different.

BYD for example uses its own AGVs and AMRs now. It's forklift have been paired with Cyngn tech for sales outside of China, not sure about within China.

Geely uses AGVs/AMRs from HikRobot (which is robotics division of Hikvision)

For robots, it's a combination of Kuka, ABB, Estun, Fanuc and Inovance probably. I wouldn't worry about it. The domestic market share is already 50% (not counting Kuka). BYD claims it uses the world's best spray robot for painting its cars. Does it really need to use the best? probably not.

oh and it builds its own robots

These are all different kind of smart forklifts/AMRs that BYD has in operation. Also the one below. they are moving pretty fast here

meh, some of my pictures are too large, but yeah. They make a lot of their own stuff. And these things are pretty advanced.

Stamping Press: Jier dominates this market

Die casting/gigapress: several players like
Haitian, Lijin, yizumi working on 10000 ton gigapresses.

Robots: numerous domestic players rapidly gaining market share in painting, welding and AGV

Machining centers: more complicated landscape. German and Japanese machine tools dominate ICE factories, especially grinding/milling machines for molds, engine parts and gears in gearboxes, but EVs give domestic machine tool makers new opportunities. Chinese players also doing well in new niche tools like laser cutting and 3D printers and doing not so well in old niche areas like EDM

Key components: sensors like interferometers, encoders and gratings are unexpectedly doing well thanks to advances in domestic semiconductor industry. Domestic servo motor/drives and reduction gears (both RV and harmonic type) for industrial robots now occupy over 50% market share, a rapid improvement from a few years ago. However, domestic key components for machine tools still lag far behind. Spindles, milling heads, ultra precise bearings have been indigenized only recently.

for industrial robot. please read my recent post on ''Robotic'' thread. very information and will clear your doubts. Chinese domestic brands captured 50 percent domestic market. and break into high end components of industrial robots. decisively broke Japan monopoly. also successfully build local supply chain ..

for high end machine tools in ICE, Japan and Germany dominated for long. milling , grinding , CNC controller. but Chinese companies recently made huge progress in this sector. completely localized all core parts like milling heads, ultra precise bearings. domestic share of high end CNC machine went from 2 percent to 35 percent as of 2022..

This is ''HuazhongCNC'' High end CNC milling machine..

this Chinese made high end CNC milling machine cutting combustion engine inside part .. very rare feat.

these machine usually dominated by Japan and Germany .. this Chinese made machine is as good as '' FANUC CNC milling controller'' as per the company's own statement ..

By the way, Hong Kong's LK Technologies also owns Italy's IDRA, which makes gigapress for tesla factories.
