.
In THIS version the demon is depicted as Xi Jinping and the lion has bitten off his head.
This is not the first time these idols have been modified to have a political content. Usually the demon is shown with a goatee beard and skull cap symbolizing Muslims and once way back the demons features were sculpted to resemble a PLA soldier.
In short the message of the diorama is :
Just as the Goddess Durga slayed the demon Maheshasur so shall she slay
Xi Jinping,
As far as I can remember this is the very first time the demon Maheshasur has been configured to resemble a political figure.
The goddess Durga has often been sculpted to resemble cine stars and
once in 1971 the features were made to resemble Indira Gandhi fighting Pakistan. The demon was a nameless enemy soldier being impaled on a spear by "Indira Gandhi".
This time the idol scene is specific ( the "demon" is Xi Jinping) and more gruesome with the lion biting off the head.

Saw some in social media.

They have been killing statues since forever. And keep killing it every year
Strictly speaking those are not statues
which would be permanent ones made of stone or plaster.
Those are temporary idols ( the Hindi word is Pratima). These are made of a bamboo frame with straw stuffing bound with strings and then given a coating of wet clay, The clay is sun dried ( not kiln baked), and then painted over with lime based colors.
At the end of the 10 day festivities the idols are tipped over into the nearest body of water, usually a river, pond or lake, and sometimes the sea shore.
The pollution of the water bodies from the paint from the immersion of tens of thousands of idols is intense.
But there is a some money to be made by the idol making communities. These idol makers are low caste "Potter" artisans normally engaged in making clay pots and roofing tiles.,The idols are only made in the season.

Me too. People crave what they lack most. People who are incredibly weak and incompetent often have wild fantasies of total dominance over their adversaries which they have no chance against in the real world just like a person dying of thirst in the desert imagines oases of pure drinking water while staring at burning sand.
Sometimes they perform these primitive rituals to hopefully improve their weapon system. Here's India Defence Minister Rajnath Singh performing a primitive ritual by placing a coconut behind the Rafale IRST, hopefully it will help it to detect a J-20. Or maybe he placed it there to keep the coconut from rolling off the nose cone.

What he is performing is a dumbed down version of "Shastra Puja" . This Shastra Puja; literal meaning : Worship of Weapons, is performed by Rajputs Mr. Rajnath Singh is Rajput by caste.
The Shastra Puja is also performed by most Indian Army infantry regiments especially the Dogra, Kumaon, Gurkha Jat and Rajput infantry regiments .
All the weapons are stacked and worshipped. Significantly the Sikh regiments don't have Shastra Puja.
This is an ancient tradition going back a thousand years. Worshipping weapons are supposed to make them perform better. Earlier the swords and spears were worshipped. In the modern era it is a Rafale fighter. Notably the tech.savvy sections of the armed forces such as Air Force, Corps of Signals, Corps of Engineers, Army Medical Corps, etc. have until now shunned Shastra Puja. These are manned by a composite caste and linguistic population mix.
This is the very FIRST time a Shastra Puja has been performed on an aircraft.
The Rafale was beefed up ( oops ! ) rather fortified by the Puja which was deemed necessary after Mig 21s which had not undergone such a ceremony were found wanting in perfotmance against enemy F-16s and JF-17s .

Back during the Ming Dynasty cannons, especially large caliber Portuguese or Dutch imports, were given the ranks of generals and shrouded with red blankets.
