The ASMI resembles an MP7 PDW, but its not a PDW. Its a machine pistol chambered in 9 x 19mm Parabelum. Machine pistols are not very big in law enforcement and the military. They much prefer proper SMGs and PDWs. So this is a strange weapon to develop for the Indian Army.
"And increasingly so do American police forces. About 60 percent of the firearms in use by police are 9mms, many of them Glocks, whose relatively lightweight part-plastic bodies make them a good choice for someone who has to carry one around all day."

This weapon is probably a replacement for Uzi/MP5 used by Para SF.

American police do use 9mm automatic weapons. But not machine pistols. Full sized submachine guns. Like the MP5 and UMP SMGs. These have better control in automatic fire than machine pistols. Besides the article says nothing about US police liking machine pistols. Glocks in law enforcement use are almost universally semi-auto only. Full-auto machine-pistol Glocks are not as widespread as depicted in the movies. There is little tactical value in full-auto Glocks for law-enforcement. In fact for any that were fielded, they would only be used as a regular service pistol 1st.

If this is a replacement for Paratrooper MP5 and Uzis, those were actually SMGs, not machine pistols. Those are different types of firearms. Instead they should be using Carbines by today's standard.

I mean just look at the size of the gun, you're really going to call it a machine pistol? Unless the soldier is a midget or they decided to fill half the gun with a lead weight that barrel is not pistol length.

I know. But its not me calling it a machine pistol. Its them, the DRDO. Look at the sign behind the soldier.

I dunno why they call it a machine pistol. Its nowhere near as compact as the Skorpion or Glock 18. Maybe because it uses Glock magazines? Or maybe they have another dedicated SMG design? If anything just call it an SMG then. It fits the description better.

Maybe its wise to not read much into the Title of a panel in a Presentation Stall. I don't think enouigh attention has been put into it and therefore warrants less attention from here.
