I am more interested in the internals of this machine pistol/SMG... from the position of the charging handle, it should have a telescoping bolt, I wonder why they needed such a large space behind the bolt... and if they are going to put that much space behind the bolt then why this configuration instead of a more conventional SMG layout... it doesn’t seem like this thing can be fired one handed either way and it doesn’t seem like it has a selector either, at least from the photos online...

India Today would happily explain the weapon's function and intended role for the Indian military. Noticed that the word "Machine Pistol" is blared continuously throughout the video. It even mentions that this is "India's 1st Indigenous Pistol". Whatever it is, it appears to be an Uzi-like SMG. But appears possibly to be closed bolt unlike the Uzi's open bolt design. I can't tell much since India Today did not show the weapon being fired.

I still don’t really understand... the roles they are talking about can just as easily be filled by a SMG with a folding stock... the thing is definitely a close bolt, at least the video answered my selector question... but I am still confused about the huge space behind the bolt, if they are intending for this thing to be as small as possible...

Well. This is an Indian design. Machine pistol or SMG, they are proud of it and have already decided the roles for it.

Usually behind the bolt there would be a buffer spring to absorb the recoil. There is a lot of space there. So it could fit a larger spring there. Hence the weapon could potentially have comfortable felt recoil. Though we need to see it in action to make any proper judgement.

True but surely the buffer spring wouldn’t need to be that powerful... the gun from the outside seems to be mostly polymer so the 1.7-2kg empty weight (according to Wikipedia, so add salt) would be the barrel and bolt, since it’s a straight blowback the bolt would need to be quite heavy to delay the blowback and ensure the case doesn’t explode in the gun, further since its firing 9x19, you shouldn’t need a massive buffer spring in the first place which was why I was confused by the huge space... tho I could wrong about this...

Astra Mark 2 trials with Su-30 MKI might also start this year.

Meanwhile, on the Indo-US defence co-op front :

> Boeing to begin production of six AH-64E Apache for the Indian Army in India this year: Michael Koch of Boeing Defense India.

> "Under an agreement between the US & India, the 155mm M777A2 ULH systems are being assembled, integrated/tested in India by Mahindra Defence Systems as part of the Make in India programm". "To date, BAE Systems has delivered 41 guns to the Army"

> Boeing says it has received a licence from the U.S. government to market the F-15EX to the Indian Air Force.

I am not sure if that's a printing mistake, but the 2nd name says uttam "AESA" variant??

India has developed AESA radar?
Yes, it is being developed and has been tested on Tejas prototypes.

It was developed for Mark 2.
But now last few batches of MK1A will have Uttam AESA other then Israeli radar and has been earmarked for Su-30MKI an up-scaled version.

As usual for India, a follow-on version for AMCA, a so-called 'advanced' variant is also under development. Maybe they will call it 'Uttam Mark 2' or something.

Likely with foreign assistance although I doubt the fully " indigenous" nature of it. So many so called home grown systems are either license manufactured with considerable modifications or has subsystems or components sourced from elsewhere.

It is to be expected as there is no Aladdin magic lamp to rub out innovations that more often requires billions of investment and foundation in the real world.
