VIENTIANE, March 27 (Xinhua) -- With its first 500-meter-long rail steadily laid on the subgrade, the China-Laos railway kicked off its track laying work on Friday in Lao capital Vientiane.

The rail is the longest one outside China in Asia and it was also the first time the CYP500 track laying machine has been used in railway construction in Southeast Asia, said Hu Bin, project manager of the China Railway No. 2 Engineering Group (CREC-2).

The machine has advantages of high reliability, strong compatibility, standardized operating procedures, and high laying accuracy, he told Xinhua.

The CYP500 can lay about 2 km-tracks per day, exceeding the required average daily laying progress of 1.5 km.

The Laos-China Railway Co., Ltd. (LCRC), a joint venture based in Vientiane in charge of the construction and future operation of the railway, told Xinhua on Friday that the first track laying of the China-Laos railway indicates that the railway construction has entered a critical period of track engineering.

Since the commencement of construction in December 2016, Chinese and Lao engineering companies have overcome complex geological and geographical environments and resource shortages, adhered to quality work, dynamically optimized construction organization, scientifically allocated construction resources, and carried out environmental protection in design and construction, according to the LCRC.

The project construction has been advancing in an orderly and steady manner amid the COVID-19 pandemic, said a LCRC press release, adding that the project progress can meet the scheduled completion date in 2021.

The China-Laos Railway is a strategic docking project between the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative and Laos' strategy to convert from a landlocked country to a land-linked hub.

The 414-km railway, with 198-km tunnels and 62-km bridges, will run from Boten border gate in northern Laos bordering China, to Vientiane with an operating speed of 160 km per hour.

The electrified passenger and cargo railway is built with the full application of Chinese management and technical standards.

The project started in December 2016 and is scheduled to be completed and open to traffic in December 2021.

What you guys think This line will improve the security of Southern Chinese border considerably. It is mammoth jobs lasted decades. The section from Lhasa to Nyingzhi should be finished 2021. Chengdu -Yaan should be finished about the same time . The Complete line won't be finished until 2025 .
"Kangding-Nyingchi segment of Sichuan-Tibet Railway would start construction in 2018 and it's expected to be accomplished by the year of 2025, five years ahead of schedule", said Lin Shijin, the deputy chief engineer of China Railway Corp.
Another line is planned from Korla in Xinjiang but still in planning phase.

This line comes very close to the PLA frontier and mountain pass such as Cona (opposite Indian occupied Tawang), Medog and Zayu.

The eventual plan was to open a supply line from Chengdu, far more efficient than from Qinghai-Tibetan railway.

The reason PLA retreated from South Tibet in 1962 is logistic. Logistic will improve tremendously with this line.

Today if PLA take Tawang-> Bomdila, she can hold it.

Meanwhile from Shigatze, another rail was planned to reached Geelong, the frontier town of Nepal. It will break India choke on Nepal.

Kangding-Nyingchi Segment of Sichuan-Tibet Railway
As a major corridor to Tibet, Sichuan-Tibet Railway starts from Chengdu and ends at Lhasa, via Ya'an, Kangding, Gangtuo, Chamdo, Nyingchi and Lhokha. The operating length of Chengdu Lhasa railway is about 1,838 kilometers and its main truck is around 1,738 kilometers. Covering 1,413 kilometers of bridges and tunnels, the engineering investment is estimated to be over 216.6 billion yuan. Chengdu Tibet railway has a designed speed of 200 km per hour, and some segments are limited to 160 km per hour. Once completed, it would take passengers only 13 hours to

by train. However, up to now, it still costs tourists almost three days to drive from Chengdu to Lhasa.

Construction work of Chengdu-Ya'an railway has started by the end of 2014; Lhasa-Nyingchi railway has also begun building since June 2015. The feasibility study of Ya'an-Kangding (Xinduqiao) railway has been finished in January 2016. And the pre-feasibility study of Kangding-Nyingchi railway will be completed this month, so far, we'll have a chance to see the integrated Sichuan Tibet Railway Line.

has already been completed, and trains are already running along this section of the route, terminating at the moment in Shigatse City, to the west of Lhasa.

The remainder of the route, which has yet to be completed, has been proposed to cross the rest of the plateau following the rough path of the Friendship Highway. The proposed crossing point of the railway line is at

In planning phase is line to Bhutan from Shigatze to Yadong

Lhasa Yadong Train Route
The first part of the Lhasa to Yadong line is going to follow the Lhasa-Shigatse railway, which will then branch off and head southwards towards the Indian state of Sikkim. A small county that juts southwards in-between India and Bhutan, Yadong County is a strategic point for crossing the border into India, and a railway service would be a blessing to both tourists and trade partners alike.

However, the railway is still in the planning stages, and construction has not yet started, although it has been reported that the line is expected to be completed by 2020. AS the section from Lhasa to Shigatse is already complete, the remaining section should not be as hard to construct, especially now that the track builders have had plenty of experience in building railway lines in the high-altitude plateau environment.

Great!, but I am not sure whether security of the Indian border is the main reason for the construction. I think it is for the more opening of Tibet, the security is just a bonus. China has had already massive airlift fleets Y-9. Y-20 IL-76, etc. So there is no issues at all to secure the border

Well Indian has better geographical advantage than China since their territory is on lower elevation and more vegetation and closer to Urban center meaning it can be reinforced easily.Plus most of Indian air and army bases are located closer to the border, So their logistic line is shorter.

Tibet is harsh region and cannot support a large army because it will deprive the civilian of the same good
So most of the large Chinese bases are located in Qinghai and Xinjiang a long logistic line and cabe easily disrupted. That is why this new line will add security The distinction between civilian and military is blurred in Tibet During the 50's Chinese army has the foresight of building road from Xinjiang to Tibet , Qinghai to Tibet and that proof tobe god send in 62 war

Like they say some people talk of flashy weapon, tactic but professional talk about logistic

Driven by a resilient global demand for Chinese goods ranging from personal protective equipment (PPE) to home appliances, China-Europe freight trains, which have become a pillar for the trade for countries along the Belt and Road when other transports were disrupted by the COVID-19 outbreak, have seen record growth in the early two months of the year.

A total of 2,213 freight trains were dispatched between cities in China and Europe in January and February combined, up 96 percent year-on-year, and the amount of goods delivered was also significant at 209,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), up 106 percent year-on-year, according to the report the China State Railway Group Co (China Railway) sent to the Global Times over the weekend.

Since last May, more than 1,000 trains have been dispatched each month for 10 consecutive months, the report said.

This came as the number of trains running across last year was 12,406, an increase of 50 percent year-on-year, exceeding the “10,000” mark for the first time and 7.3 times than that of 2016, Zhao Chenxin, a spokesperson of the National Development and Reform Commission, told a press conference in January.

Bucking the trend

BRI related countries have played an important supporting role in the sustained improvement of China’s foreign trade. In January and February, China’s exports to the BRI related countries reached 1.62 trillion yuan ($249 billion), a year-on-year increase of 23.9 percent, China Customs said on Sunday.

Zhao Juan, research fellow with the China Railway Economic and Planning Research Institute, told the Global Times on Sunday that the China-Europe freight train, an iconic logistic channel for the Belt and Road, has been under rapid growth since last year for it delivers goods faster and cheaper than ships and planes.

As shipping freight rates have largely increased due to a container shortage created by a backlog at foreign ports, the transport time and fees of the train remain relatively stable.

Despite congestions abroad, trains only take 18 days to arrive in Germany, shorter compared to around 35 days by sea, a trader told the Global Times.

“China-Europe freight trains are becoming very popular, especially after the suspension of some transport services by sea and air due to the ongoing outbreak,” a staff at Chengdu International Railway Logistics Service told the Global Times over the weekend, noting that even the most advantageous shipping prices have been rising precipitously, making it more expensive than the freight trains these days.

Driven by the booming logistic demand, the trains have also been booked to such an extent that many providers have even introduced lottery system to allocate trains and containers, media reports.

The China-Europe freight trains have performed better in particular areas including Yiwu in East China’s Zhejiang Province – commonly referred to as the world supermarket.
