I'm just having another look at ARM. They have costs of $1.2B per year.

So one could reasonably expect that if Huawei were to spend $1.2B per year, Huawei would eventually come up with an alternative.
But the problem is that this takes time, needs design software and relevant human expertise.

Huawei's results in 2018 were:

Revenue: $107B
Costs: $98.3B (of which $15B was R&D)
Profit: $8.7B

So if revenue is drop slightly to $100B in 2019 and 2020, that would suggest that Huawei can still afford to increased R&D spending in 2019 and then 2020,

After all, Huawei has no choice but to do replace US technology that it can't buy.

Time is always the friend of China. It is Time that defeated the Mongol, it is Time that defeated the Japanese. Because only Time will show truth from falsehood.

At the height of the Mongol invasion, no amount of intellect will ever convince them that their sword and arrows might conquer the flesh, but will eventually lose against the heart and mind. It took a hundred years, (a painful hundred years for Chinese people, where we are treated as third class citizens in our own native land), but Time delivered that long overdue justice.

At the height of the Japanese invasion, no amount of intellect will ever convince them that they are walking into a strategic trap in which every tactical victory will only entrap them even more, until they have utterly depleted all their resources and relative advantages. It took them 20 years to realize what they have done is not only a total waste of time and resources, but as a result cost them their empire, and also cost them a once-in-two-millennium opportunity to be a regional dominant power in East Asia while facing a divided China that could be kept divided for centuries.

only after this realized you're the debater from the USSR withdrawal from Dalian https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/j3...-huawei-most-griping-in-us-minds.t8524/page-8

Well, whatever your intentions are, your sarcastic tone is suggesting to me that you think all our effort to resist and counter action against Trump administration's attack on China is futile, that we should just drop our weapons and surrender. I am telling you we don't give a shit about what you think, and no amount of your derision can weaken our resolve.

If Huawei persists and fight on, even if it dies, it is worthy of being Chinese. If Huawei chickens out and capitulates, it is garbage.

Oh, I see. I didn't read your reply carefully enough. You're right, you could certainly call me "the debater from the USSR withdrawal from Dalian".

I actually misread it and thought you meant that I am the debater who argued that USSR withdrawn from Dalian as a result of China's participation in the Korean War. For this point, I only stated what I believe without actually going in detail to present why I believed so. Thus I said "I hardly even debated my point".

Huawei won't die. It probably has 2 years of stagnant sales at $100B. Then it should start growing again like before, as it replaces US technology and moves into new market segments.

That is even without explicit government intervention.

But a government bailout is always in the background if required.

I don't wan you to think I hate you or anything. I am just deeply nationalistic. I know I am a bit too emotional, but I am sincere. The majority of the Chinese people admire the West, just like me. We love your music, art, mythology, philosophy, scientific thoughts, as well as the beauty and depth of your religion. But this does not mean we will sell ourselves to be your pets, and capitulate to your whim. We have our own identity, our own past, our own culture and our own country, and we will defend these to death. It is our passion for our own civilization, for China, that gave us the joy, the confidence and the spirituality to enjoy, love and admire your culture and civilization (one that is alien to us).
