A Dutch radio journalist just reported from Maidan square that many people in Kiev do not trust any of the candidates for the elections of next Sunday, even those who know which candidate they will vote for.

For the most part, their pool of candidates are basically the same bunch of oligarchs for the last 2 decades, throw in a few new faces (or new money as I'd call them) into the mix but essentially the same brood.

With or without Maidan revolt, the Ukrainians are stuck with those same faces ever since the collapse of USSR.

Exactly. That's what the journalist reported. But people interviewed wondered why the occupation of the square still continues. The occupiers must be paid to stay there.
What kind of "free and fair" election is it when people vote for the least objectionable candidate if they vote at all?

hope it's authentic -- I'm saying this mainly because I couldn't see and hear it all at the same time, looked like some trouble with Adobe Flash Player 13.0 r0 :-(
I assume it was taken in Krasnyi Luch, Luhansk District:

The armed lady said after 01:30 "... we don't want to get new Slavyansk, Odessa, Mariupol here, so we'll hold here until the victorious end; no Banderite [expletive] will enter Krasnyi Luch-Luhans land. Guaranteed!"

Better control and more access to the Black Sea and gas pipelines going through the Crimea.

Russia was never restricted from accessing the Black Sea as things stood, and the pipelines in the Crimea aren't vital to Russia.

As long as they are in continuous turmoil whether economically or politically the people will no longer wants to be a part of that government and instead wants to side with a more stable and stronger Russia.

Unless they blame Russia for the turmoil, whether in part or full. And Putin has backed off from annexing eastern Ukraine, so what would be the point of trying to get eastern Ukrainians to want to join Russia? It makes no sense.

Russia is playing a very dangerous game if it's banking on Ukraine always being in turmoil, because if at any point things get better than Russia loses completely. It would be burning all its bridges with Ukraine. These are people that generally want good relations with Russia. Why give them the finger out of some feelings of inadequacy dating back to the fall of the Soviet Union?

Remember for each day Ukraine is in a crisis their economy takes a hit, and that's not good.

Yes, but Russia has been hurt by the crisis too. Not nearly as much as Ukraine, but Russia would benefit from a swift resolution that would allow diplomacy to repair relations with foreign governments.

Our more naive members will insist it could be if Moscow stay out of it, but as we should know by now, expecting Ukrainians to vote without under the influence of fear or favour is impossible, and the source of those are, and will be, from their own fellow countrymen...

A notion often panned by the Western media and their parrots is that free and fair election will solve all problems, but the truth is that such notion is "lab sterile" if you know what I mean.

The BBC is reporting a major attack on Ukrainian Military Checkpoint near Donetsk with reports of 14 military dead, up to thirty wounded, three armoured vehicles and sundry ordinary ones destroyed.

The Russian Media however have barely mentioned the event and local Pro Russian leaders are denying all involvement.
Although they issued a warning earlier about troop build ups and provocations ahead of polling day.

All of which makes this segment of the BBC article all the more interesting

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an army major who spoke to the survivors of the attack told our correspondent he was sure that the attackers were not Donetsk separatists but "mercenaries".

Mercenaries is a strange term, as the usual designation for the Separatists is either Terrorists or Russians.
This itself ties in with remarks about the army unit being regulars who had been unwilling to fight against locals.

This story is developing by the hour so I will see what else comes over the coming hours.

Ukraine crisis: ambush at checkpoint leaves 11 dead

Telegraph - Ukraine's government has confirmed an attack on an army checkpoint in the eastern region of Donetsk that has left up to 11 people dead.

The dead bodies were on display at a Ukrainian military checkpoint, witnesses said, after pro-Russian insurgents attacked the checkpoint in the village of Blahodatne on Thursday.

Three charred Ukrainian armored personnel carriers and several other burned military vehicles stood at the site of the attack.

Witnesses said about 30 Ukrainian troops were wounded when the insurgents attacked the checkpoint.
Pro-Russian insurgents in the east, who have seized government buildings and engaged in clashes with government troops that have left scores dead since April, on Thursday continued battling the Ukrainian forces around Slovyansk, the eastern city that has been the epicenter of fighting.

In the village of Semenovka on the outskirts of Slovyansk, artillery shelling that appeared to come from government positions badly damaged several houses on Thursday.

Zinaida Patskan, 80, had the roof of her house torn off by an explosion, which also shattered one of the walls. "Why they are hitting us?" she said, bursting into tears. "We are peaceful people!"

Patskan, who was not hurt, said she was hiding under a kitchen table with her cat, Timofey, when the shelling came.
About a hundred Semenovka residents later vented their anger against the central government, demanding that the Ukrainian forces cease their offensive and withdraw from the region. Speakers at the rally also called for boycotting the presidential vote.

I will now get back to bottling my Malbec

yeah mainstream Central European serves since yesterday afternoon were announcing "the crackdown on Separatists in Slavyanks" "to happen today, the final victory before Presidential elections" (probably they were re-gur-gi-tat-ing the propaganda of Ukrainian government, fortunately I didn't have time to check :) as this was Bravo Sierra) so I was afraid the Rules of Engagement had been changed for the Ukrainian Army, I mean I thought artillery would be used (I noticed Separatists had recently complained about being shelled, but I didn't believe it) which would've caused Collateral Damage ...

RT have finally published on this story

they are putting the death toll at 16 and are frank about this being a National Guard attack on Regulars who refused an assault order against the local civil populace.

There is six minute video showing helicopters helping to attack some ground targets and some large explosions coming from the ground,

The story being put out is certainly credible.

SampanViking, you believe what you will but gazeta.ru quotes its Ukrainian correspondent who quotes Separatists informing about killing 30 members of Ukrainian Mililtary, injuring 35:
