I have been tracking the building up of the PLAN since 1997 and have including the tables each year in my annual report.

The fact is, the US was reducing in size for several years, but then slowly began to turn that trend around.

It has not turned around nearly to the point where we are exceeding the PLAN build of their Type 056, Type 054A, Yype 052D and now Type 055 combined.

But the US is building quite a few vessels now including the LCS which are going to end up being fine...even though they have had a ridiculously belabored start that was completely unnecessary, building a lot more DDGs, will be building more FFGs, and has continued to build the best SSns on the planet.

When you include the US buildup and add the Koreans, the Japaneses and now Australia to the mix, you find that all of those navies together are keeping parity with the Chinese buildup.

...and I predict that the US will continue to turn things around and continue to increase in numbers over the next ten years.

The US edge with its carrier task forces remains vital and ritical.

The US keeping, for as long as possible all 22 Ticos is critical. They will out balance the Type 055 as ong as they remain available...and the US should do all in its power to keep them available until the design a new CG and begin building them...and I do not include the Burke III as that answer.

We shall see...but things are not nearly as critical as some would have you believe.

It is critical that the US be wary of and recognize the tremendous buildup the PLAN has embarked on. But it is not a dooms day scenario.

The huge difference inc capability and numbers of SSns would be extremely telling in any actual conflict...and devastating to the player that did not have them.

Anyhow, if the US follows through and up arms the LCS, builds the new FFGs as FFGs, continuous a fairly rapid build of Burkes and Virginias, and then gets the F-35s deployed on the LHAs, LHDs, and CVNs, then the ability for the US to exert tremendous power and force will continue to allow the US Navy to enjoy a significant lead for the next many years to come.

Then if the US goes ahead and in the early to mid 2020s actually design and then build 20 CGs to replace the Ticos, that edge will continue to stand well apart from any opponent.

We all need to remember also the Chinese don't need a big navy whereas the US must maintain a big navy the only reason the Chinese are expanding like this is their own personal interest and create mischief for the other Asian powers and the U.S. it's also a old Russian saying that quantity has a quality of its own type of theories just build more so the other navy's run out of bullets before you run out bullets

You may wonder but this is moving at light speed in government terms these things usually take months if not years
