There's something bizarre going on in India. Economic indicators are slowly going up but a big public health measurement like height going down at India's current level of development?
A couple of years ago there were reports that India had been cooking the books.
Maybe the wealth is only distributed among the uppers castes.

Malnutrition was actually getting worse in India in the past 5 years prior to the pandemic.
Old post with references below.

That's not entirely accurate.

Whilst the best Indians are the equal of anyone, there are so very few of them.

India's institutions, upbringing and education of children is awful.

For example in 2014, 38% of Indian children were physically stunted due to malnutrition, which retards healthy brain development and learning during lessons.

And in the 5 years from 2014-2019, malnutrition had somehow gotten worse despite moderate economic growth in India.
That is how much the Indian *elite* cares about its less fortunate citizens.

Plus since 2020, poverty has skyrocketed in India due to the pandemic.
I reckon India has lost at a minimum of 5 years of development so far.

But back to your point of the USA importing large numbers of Indians.
There are only 18 million Indians who live on more than $600 per month, which I reckon is indicative of a white-collar job or university education.
And those *elite* Indians will import the same mindset they grew up with in India

Or maybe there is unequal distribution of wealth. The wealth generated in India over the two decades went to a small section of the population.

Not a very surprising finding since such a phenomenon exists in many developing countries including China ( or even in developed countries like US). In China's case, the government has more tools at its disposal to combat it due to its unique political and economic reality - "communists" getting money to spend creates weird and surprising outcomes.

According to a Lancet study, the increase in Chinese height since 1985 has been the highest in the world.

Height is a critical indicator for nutritional quality and health.

If the Indian height data is true, I'm not sure what to make of it. Indian average height cresting over at sub 2k gdp per capita... must be absolutely no middle class in India.

It's true. There have been too many studies on how malnutrition is getting worse in India.

But it's not unexpected if you have a central government in Delhi which has been consistently and grossly incompetent since its founding, plus a BJP Hindutva ideology which denigrates the half of the population which is comprised of Muslims+Dalits

That not so weird our hunter and gathers forefathers were all bigger and stronger then modern man and had mostly a carnivore diet so plenty of access to protein the building blocks for the human body. When we transitioned toward a more agricultural society we sacrificed strength and height for bigger sustainable population numbers.

Usually better economic conditions mean better access to daily meat supply and calories.

Indeed. I've come across that article.

The middle class of India and Middle class of some developing/developed countries are vastly different entities. There exists therefore a lower/middle/upper subclassifications of the middle class. India has mostly lower middle class while China has "Middle" middle class. The consumption of sub-premium brands like BMW/Mercedes between the middle classes of two countries give an idea ( the Indian numbers are ridiculously low). Even though trying to give a positive light on the sales of a German brand in China isn't exactly comfortable for me and is quite silly, it is a nice pointer to many things considering the allure of these ever radiant German brands.

By 2020
Annual Sale of BMW in China : 500,000 appr
Annual sale of Mercedes in China: 200,000 appr
( yearly increasing)

Annual sale of BMW in India: 8,000 appr
Annual sale of Mercedes in India: 7000 appr
( yearly decreasing) !
