It's not the government's fault that they took the easy way out and partied for four years instead of spending time studying a difficult major like medicine, engineering, or software. The nature of an election based democratic system means that people who are better communicators get elected, especially in the information age.
I don't think that liberal arts majors necessarily make worse governing officials than STEM majors. The problem is that many of the elected officials are not intellectually up to the task regardless of their previous background. There is no easy cure for stupid.
It is also true that the culture of the west against intelligence and more to do with what is cool and work can definitely play a part in the overall picture we see of the west right now. The government certainly could have changed things but given who is and what the people want in office, well failure is the only option

A poll released on Wednesday by Bright Line Watch and YouGov reveals that a large portion of Americans from across the US want their regional area to secede from the union, with southern Republicans and West Coast Democrats apparently the most dissatisfied with the status quo.
In total, 44% of southerners support secession, with 66% of Republicans expressing a desire for the South to part ways with Washington. Half of southern independents also expressed support for secession, as did 20% of Democrats in the region.
Over on the West Coast (which included Alaska and Hawaii), there was less desire to break away, with a total of 39% of Americans expressing support for secession – but here Democrats were the most likely to want to secede at 47%, followed by independents (33%), and Republicans (27%).
Though the South and the West Coast were the two US regions with the most desire to break free, numbers were also high in the rest of the country.
In the northeastern United States, 34% of Americans said they want to secede from the union, with Democrats and independents at 39% and 35% respectively, while 26% of northeastern Republicans felt the same.

Yes, in theory, making an enemy of China could act like glue to bind the polarized elements of society. However, in reality, China acting more as an excuse for incompetence and corruption by leaders especially on the right to divert blame and attention away from their own internal problems. Only when the West can recognize their arrogance and admit to their own failings will they be able to begin to address the underlying rot at their core.
Everything that the USA is doing right now is serving not only as a stop gap measure rather then part of a real long term plan but also mostly without any regards as to how angry this is making China and ultimately with an extreme blindness as to how many victims that they have harmed around the world and how much these victims are just waiting in the wings for the right opportunity to bring vengeance. This might be of interest but many people around the world, a lot in the USA have received visions and dreams of Russia and China invading the USA and basically curb stomping the USA so hard that they will never recover. If it was one person having these visions, it would be heresay and nonsense but if thousands of people are receiving the same vision without knowing of each other and yet the government is doing everything they can to lead themselves down this path to this inevitable conclusion when a sane person will do everything they can to avoid this, well people, in the near future, we could finally see the sun set on the USA for good. This didn't need to happen but inevitably as part of how history works, if a nation cannot help themselves and just basically cross line after line, well really the west will only learn this painful lesson when they are the ones that will be discriminated against like they have been doing to there minorities for generations and this time, they will suffer for a millennium, all of this completely earned by failing in ever sense of the word and this time, the media will not being around to paint them as victims, they will lose their voices.
It will only unite the political elite but the masses except for some racist Trumpers( who are still millions of people) don't really care that much for China.
