I think Japanese cars are relying too much on their past reputation.
They are still good and reliable, but problem is others are catching up and are providing better features that Japanese cars are struggling to provide.

Korean and Chinese car manufacturers are making in road nowadays at their expense.
Check on the offerings from Chinese manufacturers like GWM ( Haval Suvs, Cannon/Poer pickup), SAIC (MG Suvs ) and Geelys.
You'll be surprised at the quality and features, and the warranties being provided.

Big inroad is made in Australian market despite the trade war, spearheaded by MG and GWM soaring sales.

@KenC sadly here in the Philippine only Japanese cars are affordable (due to ASEAN FREE TRADE), Europeans and American made cars are expensive, Korean made had poor reputation and are price the same with the Japanese. While the Chinese made cars while cheaper had poor after services. The Japanese domination will stay the same for another 20 -30 years ( EV may not take off due to lack of infrastructure) with Toyota leading the pack by a wide margin.

@zszczhyx I saw GAC and MG, with a few BYD dealership, what's popular here are the light Trucks (JAC) and heavy duty trucks, HOWO and SINOTRUCK are very popular beating their Japanese and Korean rivals by a mile. Its suite our conditioned and are not maintenance heavy.

Those are heavy trucks. How about the light trucks?

@B.I.B. me too, I drove a Toyota cause its cheaper and easy to maintain, Honda price and after service are expensive, they will price themselves out of the market if things stay as it is.
IMO Honda make very good pumps and portable generators....good for small farms, camping. Most water tankers that deliver household water won't go past honda pumps.

@t2contra JAC motors their competitors are Mitsubishi and Isuzu both are expensive (old design from the last decade) and JAC are steamrolling them cause aside from being cheaper its robust and their engine is Euro 4 emission standard (the Japanese are selling their old tech highly polluted engine), regarding VAN the Chinese can't beat the new Toyota HI ACE the Grandia, it is very popular here as people mover.

addendum, I think the Chinese will dominate the light trucks (JAC) and the heavy truck (HOWO $ SINO TRUCK) sector with large sale, the after service will improve with more cheaper spare parts available. And after that they will eye the car market BUT they need to invest more especially in advertising cause there is still a stigma of made in China product.

China's BYD electric EV are superior. They have various models ranging from entry level to more sporty and luxurious models.

@B.I.B. what they produce had a cheaper equivalent with the same reliability. They want to follow the German sample to premiumized its product. It will work in certain countries but not all, it's a conundrum for them, their best seller are its mid range car (boring design and expensive to maintain) and are being pressured by the established car makers and the Chinese. They haven't invested enough in new tech and in the long run will be price out by its competitors.

@Tyler bro nice car but sadly I will never drive one in my lifetime here in the Philippines. Our infrastructure sucks and our electricity billing is among the highest in Asia. The annual flooding alone may cause a fortune to repair it. That is why SUV is the prefer choice to buy, its sporty and high enough to cross the flooded street.
