Some of the added complications when a conflict is a civil war.

Does anyone know what version of the BMD are the vehicles in the top picture? BMD-2?
The source of the heavy equipment of the people in the East is the Ukrainian army. So they need paint to show the distinction.

The Dutch broadcaster BNR just said that like US banks the Dutch banks are taking their investments out of Russia and Ukraine. No doubt the same goes for many more banks in the world. That is bound to be much more damaging to the economy of Ukraine.

SampanViking, I think you would love Russian/Ukrainian Internet ... as to what's happened in Odessa, dozens of often contradicting accounts (sort of similar to yours) appeared, and it seems gazeta.ru in the article "The Odessa Tragedy: Questions and Versions" went through "some recurrent" theories which appeared so far; the article seeks answers to four questions:
1. Who Started This?
2. Why Police Did Not Interfere?
3. What Happened in Trade Union House?
4. Who Benefits?

I could translate this, of course, but ... [self-censorship]

Obviously I am unable to read Russian.
Regarding the activities pre riot and fire at the square. The BBC yesterday described it as a signature gaining exercise for Pro Federalism, while Independent News (Ch4 ITN) was reporting that one of the first victims to be buried yesterday, who was beaten to death after escaping the fire, was an Odessa City Councillor by the name of Vladislav Marka (spelling approx). This puts more than one serving local politician and candidate at the scene and they do seem to have been deliberate targets.

The details about the councillor are in the video segment embedded near top.

Ukraine troops ambushed by pro-Russia gunmen; 14 die

LOVYANSK, Ukraine — At least 14 people were killed and scores were wounded as government forces seeking to win back this eastern Ukrainian city from pro-Russia separatists ran into an ambush Monday set up by the rebel gunmen. Operations by the Interior Ministry, army and national guard troops for the past two weeks — often more off than on — erupted in a massive shootout as their armed convoy rolled into Semyonvka, a suburb of Slovyansk. They were met by separatists firing Kalashnikovs, grenade launchers and large-caliber machine guns.

The gun battle underscored the tough resistance government forces have faced in confronting the rebels — directed, they say, by Moscow — who have seized control in more than a dozen towns and cities in eastern and southern Ukraine in a bid for greater autonomy, independence or annexation by Russia.
Witnesses described the scene outside Slovyansk, one of the centers of the rebellion, as harrowing, especially after a gas station exploded in a wall of flame.

“For a moment I lost my hearing as my car was shaken by an explosion behind,” said Alexei Sergiyenko, a 36-year-old factory worker who had just refueled his car at the station. “I stopped the car about (110 yards) from the place, ran out and lay behind it.”

Sergiyenko said gunfire continued for about five minutes. When he drove back into town, two armored vehicles carrying more than a dozen gunmen and flying the white flags of the self-proclaimed Donetsk Republic rolled past him toward the battle.

The Interior Ministry said government forces suffered four dead and 30 injured, UNIAN news agency reported. Seven rebels were slain and three were injured, said Vyacheslav Ponomaryov, the self-proclaimed mayor of Slovyansk. In addition, three civilians were killed and 15 were wounded.

Two Ukrainian Mi-24s shot down by MANPADS

Two Ukrainian Mil Mi-24 'Hind' combat helicopters were shot down in eastern Ukraine on 2 May during a major escalation of violence in the ongoing Ukraine crisis.

According to initial statements published by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence (MoD), both helicopters were shot down by man-portable air-defence systems (MANPADS), while an Mil Mi-8 'Hip' transport aircraft sustained damage from ground fire. All of the helicopters were attacked overnight close to Slavyansk in the troubled Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

Two crew members from the Mi-24s were killed in the incidents, with several more wounded, the MoD stated. The pilot of one of the Mi-24s is understood to be badly wounded and to have been captured by pro-Russian forces.

Ukraine moves special forces to Odessa, helicopter downed in east

(Reuters) - Pro-Russian rebels shot down a Ukrainian helicopter in fierce fighting near the eastern town of Slaviansk on Monday, and Kiev drafted police special forces to the southwestern port city of Odessa to halt a feared westward spread of rebellion.

Ukraine said the Odessa force, based on "civil activists", would replace local police who had failed to tackle rebel actions at the weekend. Its dispatch was a clear signal from Kiev that, while tackling rebellion in the east, it would vigorously resist any sign of a slide to a broader civil war.
