Yuan Class AIP & Kilo Submarine Thread

The only inconvenience I see in that case is the secrets of submarines when they are being built. It won't be easy to follow SSK and SSN launches, what's more, how good they are. Especially for some of us with only shallow open-source knowledge. DDG, Frigates are easy to spot.

They used to put pennant numbers back in the Song days. You can still attempt to count the submarines by the pennants. Then at some point, pennant numbers are no longer painted. That makes it impossible to determine one sub from the other. In the Yuan days, you resort to minor details like the shape of the sail.

Nowadays, the square shaped sails of the earlier Yuan class have all but disappeared. My theory is that the older Yuans with the square sails have been getting retrofitted with the new curved sails one by one. It would be impossible to distinguish the retrofitted boats from the new build.

Well, submarines are secretive for a reason. For military enthusiasts it is annoying that we aren't able to track their numbers or assess their relative capability, but obviously the PLA doesn't do things for our convenience.

Can anyone educate me with some substantial info regarding the number of crew on 093A/B/C, please. I fully understand it's NOT sort of open data. When I browse around, there are numbers from 56 to 60. While 2000-minus tones subs, like Scorpene and 216, got around 29~39, and 2000+ tones like Kilo around 52.

One much more credible reference is ST26, ~2600 tons, the official brochure says 38. And that make me truly doubtful that 039A/B/C need as many as ~58. Song class (039) is said to have 60. It's hard to imagine that 039A/B/C also need that many too. It's much heavier than 039 but we can safely assume it got much higher automation (which we saw thru several photos).

If we can hear from some crew of 039A/B/C ... ... (believe some of them must had retired since it entered service more than 13 years ago).

Wiki says it's 36. Which seems a bit small for a larger submarine but still within reason. Bizarrely, exported submarine have 2 more crew.

Wiki in Chinese said 65, almost double. Now you see why the confuse.

The number in English Wiki is closer to S26T official brochure. Nevertheless, it's much, much lower than Kilo (60), which got deep relationship with 039A/B/C. Only explanation is level of operation automation. Just wonder the key to make this difference - weapon loading? combat management system integration? or harder number like endurance?
