(I won't hold my breath until "Wildcat will receive the heavy anti-ship missile Sea Venom and the smaller Martlet to be used against small boats.")
With Sea Skua now retired, Royal Navy helicopters will have no anti-ship missiles until the Sea Venom and Martlet missiles enter service in 2020.

With Lynx retiring from service at the end of March, Sea Skua is also ending its service as its not compatible with the Lynx’s successor, Wildcat.

Wildcat will receive the heavy anti-ship missile Sea Venom and the smaller Martlet to be used against small boats.

Martlet, formerly FASGW (Light), was due to enter service around 2015 on the Fleet Air Arm’s new Lynx Wildcat maritime helicopters, it still hasn’t. However the Ministry of Defence has placed an initial order for 1,000 missiles.

Sea Venom, formerly FASGW (Heavy), is a bigger anti-ship missile designed for larger targets.

In 2014, the Royal Navy awarded Thales Group a £48 million contract to deliver Martlet and later that year a contract was awarded to MBDA for the Sea Venom missile for use against vessels and land targets, replacing the Sea Skua.

Both missiles are to be integrated by Leonardo (then AugustaWestland) in a single £90m programme by 2018, with initial operating capability for both planned for October 2020.

Wildcat is, according to the manufacturer, able to operate up to 20 Martlet missiles or 4 Sea Venom missiles to disable or destroy vessels up to 1000 tonnes.

As for Merlin, the helicopter has two hardpoints to carry four Sting Ray torpedoes or depth charges. Some customers of the aircraft have chosen to deploy anti-ship missiles. Indeed in 2011, the Royal Navy was considering equipping their Merlin fleet with an anti-surface missile. This was reportedly dropped due to cost.

RAF moves closer to Tornado farewell

The Royal Air Force moved closer to a final Tornado farewell as the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) for the type flew its last mission from Lossiemouth airbase in Scotland on Friday. Five Tornados flew a formation flypast over the airbase and other places. The end for the Tornado in the UK is set for 2019.

The OCU was better known as XV (Reserve) squadron and for several decades was responsible for Tornado GR4 crew training in the ground-attack role. Earlier, the squadron was an operational unit, flying Cold War-type combat missions from Germany

Now, only three operational Tornado squadrons remain, all based at RAF Marham. For close, to four decades, the Tornado formed the backbone of the RAF with Tornado F3 variants taking care of air defense while Tornado GR4 jets fulfilled a ground attack role. See our Tornado Time feature

The RAF for the next few decades relies on the Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed Martin F-35.

"The funding for the “Type 45 machinery improvement package” was agreed in the November 2015 SDSR and at least the problem has finally been recognised and funds are in place. Each vessel will have to be dry-docked, large openings cut in the hull and two new diesel generator sets slid into place."

etc. etc.

I was in London during a previous Terrorist attack, 7.7.2005, I remember the atmosphere throughout the city once the news spread. I have a Brother and a Niece who live in London now, though fortunately nowhere near Westminster. To some this is just another news item, but the greatest danger is to become blasé about this sort of thing.

UK sets out plan to compete Type 45 power improvement programme

  • The Type 45 Power Improvement Project may be delivered through either a single prime contract or a multi-source design and embodiment
  • The PIP upgrade implementation will see the two existing 2MW diesel generators removed, and three higher rated diesel generators introduced to increase electrical generation capacity
A major power generation upgrade for the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) six Type 45 air defence destroyers is to be opened up for competition, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has disclosed.

Information released by the MoD's Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) organisation has also revealed that the upgrade implementation - expected to run from 2019 until early 2024 - will see the replacement of two existing 2MW diesel generators and the introduction of an additional one.
