HMS Albion Gets Shipshape For A Return To Duty

She may be one of the Royal Navy's key assets but HMS Albion has been mothballed since 2011.
The engineering company, Babcock, has been given the mammoth task of bringing the amphibious assault ship back to life, ready to return to sea next year.
The Government mothballed Albion just eight years after she joined the fleet at a cost of £359 million.
The plan is that she and her sistership

The problem with HMS Ocean, Bulwark and Albion is that once they are retired they will be replaced by the two QE carriers and these carrier will be used for littoral missions

Down side is such a large assets which is designed for blue water operations mainly air centric will be doing the job of a amphibious warship making it less effective and also vulnerable from shore based attack

In my opinion UK should have bought the two mistral class from France , but I know for political reasons that would never happen

Tying down a 70,000 ton carrier for littoral missions is not a good use of tax payers money

A replacement for LHD and LPD should be found rather than adding that requirement into the two QE carriers

But I also know that is also a next to impossible ask

Bulwark class have only 10 years can serve easy again 20 they are very big and capable LPD.

Logicaly Ocean need a successor but RN have personnals problem, not enough and crew of Ocean used completely or in part ? for provide that of QE and seems RN can' t operated the 2 QE simult. with this problem.

She got in SDSR about 700 pers. in more but mainly for provide crew of RFA, these last time some remains to port ! ...

SDSR specifically included crew requirements of second QEC as part of personnel increase. RFA are not Navy they are civilian (Merchant Navy) so number would be listed separately. Albion and Bulwark currently scheduled to alternate in service until at least 2030, only Ocean is scheduled to retire in 2018.

3rd Astute Class SSN Submarine HMS Artful Fires 1st Torpedo Using New Common Combat System
The Royal Navy’s latest and most advanced Astute class submarine, Artful, has test fired her first torpedo using a new Common Combat System designed and integrated by our Submarines business.

The Common Combat System acts as the submarine’s ‘brain’ – controlling its ‘eyes’, ‘ears’ and ‘nervous system’. Artful, the third in the Astute class family, is the first to use this new technology which is now being retrofitted to earlier Astute class submarines. Work will soon begin to also retrofit Vanguard class submarines.

UK Defence Secretary Announces £642 million Investment in Next Gen Successor SSBN
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has today announced £642 million of investment for the Successor submarine programme. The funding will help to progress work on the four new submarines that will begin replacing the Vanguard class, from the 2030s. The funding will go towards new parts and facilities, as well as further design work. The investment will include £225 million of investment for new facilities, at BAE Systems at Barrow-in-Furness, where the submarines will be assembled. That investment will ensure the submarines are built with maximum efficiency.
