BTW this is Russian source and reference from Turkish president.

I was referring to globaldefencecorp. But sure there will be other parrot sources that copy paste news articles. Again, I'm sure there is some issue going on between Russia and Turkey when it comes to the S-400 sale. I'm just going to say these claims made by dodgy sources probably are not presenting the whole truth.

As a member of NATO, Turkey can ask the Americans to deploy Patriots batteries, along with operators, immediately to defend them from attack. China has no such obligation, and any HQ9 missiles would need to be bought and paid for by Turkey, and Turkish personnel would need to be trained to operate them.

Why would Turkey paid for something that would only be operational maybe years down the line, when they can ask their NATO allies for it for free and to be deployed immediately?

Although it will be a tough ask for the Turks to convince anyone that this would be a defensive necessity since their soldiers are getting killed on sovereign Syrian soil, and any NATO SAM batteries wishing to defend Turkish forces inside Syria would be firing into Syria on Syrian government forces. That is an act of aggression and war.

What a surprise:

Surprised they didn't ask China for HQ-9.
As Wolf has just correctly pointed out. They don’t want the PAC system they want American Patriot batteries. They want the US Army to deploy Patriot missiles so as to potentially force Russian and Syrian forces to “deconflict” at best or just as likely US forces to fight on their behalf for Turkish backed militias.

It's the range too. S-400 isn't a single missile type, it's a range of missiles in an integrated system. HQ-9 missile is just one type derived from the 9M83ME or whatever the S-300 equivalents were for the 300km ranged missile.

It’s not about the missile systems. It’s the troops.
The issue is whether the US would actually operate the Patriots as what Turkey has expected of them to. For all we know the US can very well do a Russia in this case, deploying the SAMs but not actually operating them against Syrian or Russian aircrafts. If that happens, then the whole act would have been for naught for Turkey.

I doubt that Turkey really cares about what kind of SAM is deployed, it's WHO that operates them that is the main point. Turkey specifically wants Patriot batteries that are operated by US personnel.

I think Turkey wants SAM systems that can successfully deter Russian aircraft from performing airstrikes in Syria.

Since the Russians built the S-400 that was supplied to Turkey, these don't deter Russian aircraft.

But the Patriot (even if operated by Turkish personnel) would deter?

And presumably Turkish operated HQ-9 batteries would do the same.
