Turkey is increasing its electronic warfare capability with a new contract signed between SSB and Aselsan:

Electronic warfare project contract worth 1.8 billion TL to ASELSAN

An agreement was signed between ASELSAN and the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) for the supply of electronic warfare systems.

ASELSAN and SSB singed an electronic warfare project contract worth 700 million TL and 85 million dollars. The cost of the contract signed with the current dollar rate (1 USD = 13.66 Turkish Liras) is 1 billion 861 million Turkish Liras. In the PDP (Public Disclosure Platform) notification made by ASELSAN..

“An electronic warfare project contract has been signed between ASELSAN and the Presidency of Defense Industries for a total of 700.000.000 TL and 85.000.000 USD. Within the scope of the said contract, deliveries will take place between 2024 and 2026."

Information on the scope of the electronic warfare project was not provided.

In the past years, ASELSAN signed a contract with the SSB for electronic warfare projects. In this context, it was announced in the notification made to the Public Disclosure Platform (PDP) on 17 December 2020 by ASELSAN that a contract amendment was signed with a value of 315.000.000 TL and 18.994.556 USD.

In the notification made to PDP by ASELSAN: “A contract amendment was signed between ASELSAN and the Presidency of Defense Industries regarding an Electronic Warfare System Project, with a total cost of 315.000.000 TL and 18.994.556 USD, on 17.12.2020. Within the scope of the said contract, deliveries will be made between 2022-2024."

So basically Aselsan will provide EW assets starting from next year all the way to 2026 on a continuous basis according to the contract singed last year and this new one. This is needed if they want to have their national integrated EW coordination center ready by 2024:

AKINCI UCAV gets AESA Radar

The National AESA Radar developed by ASELSAN is planned to be integrated into the AKINCI Attack Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (TİHA) in 2022.

T.R. Abdurrahman Şeref CAN, Head of the Aircraft Department of the Presidency of Defense Industries, made important statements about the National AESA Radar Project during the YTU Aviation and Space Seminar. CAN announced that the National AESA Radar will be put into use in 2022.

In the statement made by Abdurrahman Şeref CAN, Head of Aircraft Department, “We are in good condition on AESA Radar. We may have minor delays, but within the next year, our AESA Radar will start working in a drone. This is a project independent of the National Combat Aircraft (MMU) Project. The radar we will use in the MMU will be much more advanced than AESA. His design activities continue. We can say that ASELSAN's capability in radar is perhaps among the top 5 countries."

According to the information obtained by SavunmaSanayiST.com; Work continues to integrate the AESA radar, which is expected to be integrated into the AKINCI Attack Unmanned Aerial Vehicle system and to the F-16s in the near future. AESA radar, developed by ASELSAN and whose prototype production activities continue, will be integrated into F-16 Block 30 aircraft for the first time among F-16 aircraft.

The AESA radar project, which is expected to start factory tests as of the latest situation, started at the end of 2018 and a 48-month project schedule was determined. It is aimed that the factory test activities will be completed by the end of 2022 (F-16 AESA Radar) and be ready for use by integrating it into F-16 aircraft. National AESA Radar will be integrated into AKINCI before the F-16 platform. AKINCI UAV will be used as a test aircraft for the AESA Radar Project.

@BoraTas if you can spare the time you could listen to this interview with Osman Dur from yesterday and add anything important or correct me.

made a summary of important points:

  • All 4 engines (Azra-380hp, TTZA-600hp, UTKU-1000hp and BATU-1500hp) work. Two of them (380hp and 600hp) are in on-board testing, and the other two continue to be tested on dynamometers.
  • In fact, the engines of the Altay tank would be within TR Motor. However, when the company was a little late in the establishment and the engines of the land vehicles were distributed, only the aircraft engine remained in the hands of the company.
  • TR Motor's 2 general managers before me had serious discussions with the US (GE), British (Rolls Royce) and the French to see if we could do these (turbofan engines) things. No, the Russians were also interviewed.
  • After I became the general manager, on the one hand, the negotiations with the USA, the British, the French and the Russians continue, on the other hand, our own team is getting ready.
  • As TR Motor, we made a contract with TAI and started the "motor identification phase" study for the MMU motor. While doing this, we also cooperated with some companies in the world that will receive technical support. As a result, this phase was completed.
  • By the way, the task of the MMU (development of its engine) was NOT assigned to TR Motor. (Note: What was made public was the opposite. This is the first time this information is shared. TO)
  • Meanwhile, TAI opened the tender for the MMU auxiliary power unit (YGU, APU). Engine manufacturers from around the world also entered this tender and we got the tender. Because there is a technology transfer condition in the tender. We are currently carrying out YGU design studies.
  • TENDER was OPENED 15 DAYS AGO for the MMU engine. We are also continuing our work to bid for that tender. (Osman Bey briefly and concisely shared the point reached from the past to the present in the MMU engine.)
I watched the interview, there is nothing more to add.

According to Sunnetci and Turk rumor mil, the F-16 radar is GaN based. But I'm not entirely convinced yet.

"ASELSAN GaN-based AESA nose radar is a liquid-cooled radar. Both the AESA antenna of the radar and the Transmission Receiving and Signal Processing Unit, which is called GASIB and constitutes the brain of the system, are designed as liquid cooled."

Aaand another three!

"Three more have been added to the countries to which UCAV will be exported.

Firms will announce in the coming days."

Rumors are saying that the UAE got 8 TB2's:

"Cargo plane landed from UAE to Çorlu.
Sapsan Airlines' Ilyushin Il-76TD cargo plane landed at Çorlu Airport from Al Ain, UAE. Çorlu is believed to be the transfer point for TB2s that have completed their testing at Baykar's Keşan test site."

Will go very nicely with the ADOP-2000 system.
Some more info about the "STR"

(...)
ASELSAN received the first contract for Weapon Detection Radars in 2013 for the Mobile Mortar Detection Radar and completed the serial production of more than 15 radars (SERHAT) and put them into service of the Turkish Armed Forces. Subsequently, a contract was signed for the long-range Weapon Detection Radar in 2016. Within the scope of the project, nine long-range active electronic scanning antennas Weapon Detection Radar (STR) will be delivered.

According to the information obtained by SavunmaSanayiST.com during the "ASELSAN New System Introductions and Facility Openings Ceremony" held at ASELSAN's Gölbaşı Campus with the participation of President Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN on 12.11.2020; It is predicted that the delivered radars will create a force multiplier effect for the Turkish Land Forces Command with a range of 100+ kilometers. The SERHAT Mobile Mortar Detection Radar, which is currently actively used in critical battlefields such as Syria, has a range of 10+ kilometers.

General features

• Detection of Mortar, Artillery and Rocket ammunition
• Calculation of the shot/drop location of Mortar, Artillery and Rocket ammunitions

@siegecrossbow apparently this is the first GaN based AESA in Turkish service. I guess the GaN AESA era has started for Turkey:

"STR is a state-of-the-art GaN-based AESA radar. In this respect, STR, which is the first GaN AESA radar to be included in the inventory, will create a significant leap in TAF capabilities."

GaN offers superior capabilities to GaAs but more importantly, can be produced cheaper and in greater quantities.
