They can probably just air drop supplies. The Fua and Kafreya pocket held out in Idlib for years just on air drops. And not to mention the Abu Duhur airbase siege. Lyman is a large fortress. Don't easy for Ukrainians to take.
The only problem is that they lose Flankers in the area... clearly not a place for airdrops. They need to stop using laychair and lobing artillery and stop these fast vehicules doing encirclement. They are ridding pickup trucks like rednecks full of support mg and rpg. Load helicopter with frags rockets and shrapnel them to an halt. They are looking like amateurs right now.

The Ukrainians are using pick ups and they are still advancing? Really? If that is the case, it is a testament as to how few in number Russian forces are in that location. The negligence and the sense of comfort and security that the Russians had is incredible...

If they have to resort to air supplies then the position is pretty much lost anyways so its better to just withdraw than risking the entire formation

Does anyone know how big the garrison is?

They are basically doing cavalry or jihadi charges at the expense of manpower in order to gain as much ground as possible in the shortest amount of time. Basically, what Russia did at the start but far more underequiped.

Which puts into question how much of it they would be able to hold if the roles are reversed.

Is the Lyman encirclement militarily significant or is it being over-emphasized in the western media?
It's looking rather like Iziyum and I think it may be abandoned. Russians have reinforced positions over the last few weeks so aren't being pushed back as easily as before. Lyman isn't a fortress to whoever said that, it's a small town with a few roads. The Ukrainians abandoned it as soon the the Russians approached.

It's clear to me that Russians aren't planning on ending this war any time soon and want to drag it out for geopolitical reasons.

The latest situation according to ISW. Lyman is not surrounded yet, but the Ukrainians are right on its edges and are getting close to cutting off the Russian supply lines from the north. That Twitter map is clearly way off: it understates Ukrainian gains west of Lyman but overstates them in the east. I believe the advance from the east is more difficult because it requires the crossing of the Donets river. The Russians had insurmountable difficulty doing that this spring and summer. Although, according to this map the Ukrainians control a few kilometres of the northern bank between Dronivka and Bilohorivka.
