We're trying, but the buffoonery of the Taiwanese D&C (drilled and ceremony in army jargon) was just too much.:D

I know, if they give medals for the self-restrained. We would all get gold medals! don't get me wrong, it is not because it is Taiwan, it is because they are honoured guards, supposed to be the best of the best, cream de la cream! They have one task to do in peacetime and they completely made a dog's dinner of it, and a jackass of themselves!

Letting everyone know (at least think) that the US has ROC's back in any military confrontation with PRC. Could have predicted that with a crystal ball made of concrete.

What a pony show, one would say, what! Again! Have you got anything new?

And who you tryto kid? US got our back! Yeah, right! They didn't bothered to cover ROC's back when they were ejected from the UN.

And then led the world in switching recognition to PRC. so who's to say they wouldn't switch again when it suits their own national interest.

Problem is, the ROCA MP honour guards were known to be better, not that kind of "Day 1 FNG" stuff.

Not any military confrontation.

Taipei does something stupid like declare independence, start a nuclear weapons program, they're on their own. It's been that was since Bush the Younger, as it should be.

Not any military confrontation.

You're welcome to put a large wager with a bookmaker on that if war breaks out, but I wouldn't bank on it. If China invades and successfully occupies Taiwan, that significantly changes the military balance of power in the region. That makes things difficult for Japan, South Korea and ASEAN members like the Philippines. The US will be put in a difficult spot for sure, but it won't just automatically decide to sit it out, not least because it would be signalling to the world that China was now the dominant global power and that Washington would never defy Beijing again.

You'd need the US to have the equivalent of Jeremy Cobryn as President (a man who efffectively hates his own country and thinks that all the foreign policy decisions since 1945 were pure evil) to be sure of non-intervention.

Taiwan is already de-facto independent, so it doesn't need to declare independence. In fact, enough political statements have been made in the last 20+ years that China could easily say was a declaration of independence. If a military confrontation starts, it's likely to be because China has decided that political unification is now impossible.

As for a nuclear weapons programme, if Taiwan started that it would probably be because the US had already sold it out to Beijing.

Why do you even care? It's been about 150 years since military commanders honestly thought that the way you won a war was to ensure that your troops were the best at marching in formation, or could kick the highest.

Russian troops do some of the best ceremonial marching in the world, but they struggled to defeat Georgia in a timely manner. Same for North Korea, but we know their military would be as effective as toilet paper against any of its likely enemies (it just relies on the fear of artillery and WMD).
