Went to search it up, the event was very recent...happened during the memorial service for those KIA in the Blackhawk crash.
Can't find article in English, so...
That kind of screw up to be expected from fresh recruit in Boot Camp at Day 1, not MP up for inspection by the president.

I believe this happened this past Monday after their presidential election.
Not to be “that guy” but I don’t think it is as big of a deal as people make it out to be. Taiwan’s defense rely primarily on air force and navy. Maybe they have to allocate their resources accordingly and skimped our on the training for the ground troops.

well, I think it’s about the attitude. How dedicated are you with your training? No matter how much resources you have, you train the hardest as you can and with what you have. These guys are honor guards and their job is to walk and turn as instructed. And their most important goal is to display discipline and professionalism. They failed that at one of the most important events, to memorialize their commanding officer in front of their president.
The lack of discipline and professionalism within the Taiwanese military has been widespread. You guys remember some soldiers mistakenly fired a missile that destroyed a fishing vessel some years ago? It’s hard for any military to fight without discipline.
I believe, very recently, a soldier sued his captain and his battalion commander for “speaking too harshly to him” and for “hurting his feelings” in a civilian court. And the judge not only took the case (very weird), but also ruled for the soldier. And the military disciplined the captain and the battalion commander for saying things too harshly to the soldier. So many things like this negatively impact the morale of the military greatly.
