This ship is far too complex and expensive to be a simple bulk carrier. Clearly, it is a very large cruiser-like hull optimized for speed. If it is a civilian ship, it could be a very large ocean liner (something like Queen Mary 2), some very unique special purpose research ship (satellite tracking, etc.), or perhaps a carrier for special cargo related to e.g. the Chinese space program.

I don't believe it is a bulk carrier. Nobody at the moment would want to build a new huge bulk carrier as the industry is facing huge overcapacity and the price is not good at the moment. The same way for large ocean liner (not as bad), and for super luxury huge ocean liner normally is built in Europe, not in China

So I tend to believe it is a carrier 001A .... but like Jeff always says ...... Time will tell ;)
I expect in Sep or Oct we will get a confirmation

From what I understand their conversations over there, even with these pics fzgfzy is already Grazing the boarder line of tea time appointment with the Chinese version of NSA. The pics he posted are just to give a general ideas of the progress of 001A.

He can't show real pics of the interior parts/designs of 001A. But promise once the outside part of the hull is built and covered. There will be clear no censored pics coming out.

Someone ask fzgfzy why are US and Euro high high definition satellites can't see it, and no reports on 001A. fzgfzy's reply was of course they saw it already, and very early. ( So.. Is that mean US and Euro just don't want to release photos and report news regarding 001A to the public as well?

And I thought CJBDY will shut down for a month after the weekend, but it's still up and running.

no doubt we have excellent pictures of whatever, but that's one thing they do keep very close to their vest.

Assuming that "big tomatoes" or "big shrimps" :D are correct, what would we have in our hands ? Another STOBAR carrier similar in displacement and shape to Kunzetsov-class, with possibly more aviation facilities ?
Yes...from what they are saying now, it is pretty much exactly what we have been saying here on SD for the last several years.

It will be exciting to see her coming together.

was taken at an even earlier stage of construction, with sides built around the central compartments, and the only openings being those from the top.

With these pictures as well as in the video of USS Gerald Ford's construction, you will notice these compartments remain opened until the top exceeds the opening of the dry dock. If we were to assume the dry dock at Dalian having a similar depth as the one in Newsport News, and that the engineering section of 001A has a similar height as its American counterpart, then it would only be natural for these compartments to remain unclosed at this stage.

Its also interesting that they seem to be doing most of the building in drydock, out in the open, rather than assemble it in modules and just connect them in dry dock.

That would suggest to me that whatever they are building is new, where they are not yet comfortable applying full modular construction techniques to it, and also that whatever this is, it is very high profile, as building the whole thing in drydock is going to take considerably more valuable drydock time (and hence money), compared to building the modules in sheds and only assembling the finished ship in drydock before launch.

At his point, I think its either an LHD or carrier, maybe a wildcard possibility being the first 055. But I think, especially with the latest bulkheads own, marking the overall profile of the ship, we are looking at something military here at least.
I have a simpler explanation: the lower sections are just too big to be built as modules.

Each module is supposed to contain one or more compartments. For the lower sections however, one compartment alone can almost span the width of the hull. The length of the compartment is not any smaller either. On top of these, the height of such compartment is several decks tall. It would just be simpler and safer to build the entire thing within the dry dock to begin with.

fzgfzy posted some new pic of "001A" today, alleged hangar deck is up.:D

The way i see it:
First picture- its the same picture from a few days ago;
second picture- cant discern anything;
third picture- appears to be a module. But it doesnt appear to be in the same berth as the hull that we are talking, at least IMO;
fourth picture- same as second picture;
fifth picture- doesnt show much, but it appears to be the stern of the hull.

A few more.. he said the CG pics one are not 100% accurate. So.. Pinko can use if he likes. *lol*

The first picture appears to be a module, but in this case not only it appears to be in a diferente berth, but also im not sure if its the same shipyard. Too blurry.

And last pic, you can go see the thread yourself here. :DView attachment 17621

Actually, those 2 Sterns look quite differently. Compare the right side of the two. Also the opening in the dalian hull doesnt match the one from the kuznetzov class. But that unsurprinsing. I dont expect china´s first carrier to be a copy of a russian carrier.
