We saw this dry dock being built, used for Liaoning and IIRC used for repairing one or more bulk carriers. This ship is I think the first one being built in this dock. That too suggests this is 001A. Agreed?

There are lots of compelling factors at present which may suggest that this could be 001A, but we'll only get complete, 100% confirmation once the island is literally hoisted up and welded to the rest of the hull.

The only major reason why some believe that this may be a bulk carrier is that the compartments on the hull are not closed. But we'll only get confirmation that this hull is not a carrier (or any other military ship for that matter) once it gets launched and turns out to be a bulk carrier or whatever other kind of cargo ship.

This ship is far too complex and expensive to be a simple bulk carrier. Clearly, it is a very large cruiser-like hull optimized for speed. If it is a civilian ship, it could be a very large ocean liner (something like Queen Mary 2), some very unique special purpose research ship (satellite tracking, etc.), or perhaps a carrier for special cargo related to e.g. the Chinese space program.

Yep, all points I agree with, but I felt there was no need to muddy the discussion even further by bringing in other types of civilian ships especially when the previous assertions of the hull's non-carrier status revolved around the cargo/bulk carrier position by account of its open compartments.

So I suggest someone to go to Dalian, take pictures and post them as soon as possible ... ;):p

Not that useful actually -- we're waiting on confirmation of the hull being a carrier (or at least ruling out non-carrier options such as being a bulk carrier), so what we really need is for someone to skip forward a couple of months and come back with photos of what the hull looks like in october.

Yes, but my point was related to a statement that this "latest" image we know is by far not the most recent one and newer ones were so far not posted due to security concerns ... as such a truly "recent" image would probably help a bit more to decide.
