People panic too much. Yeah the people behind this should go to jail but the genetic changes will most likely do nothing. It's like some families carry the gene for certain disorders but never suffer from it in life. People panic over artificial intelligence but chances are it will never turn out like in the movies. It's the same fear like when I was a kid there was a bully in the neighborhood and one day a small dog barking charged towards him and the bully was running away and hiding behind other people scared of the dog. The fear is because he's not in control. He can't intimidate the dog like he can people. Why does the West want to prevent China from developing technologies they're okay with developing themselves.? They're not in control of it hence they fear it.

I'm all for genetic research and editing. We're just nowhere near doing it safely with full understanding of consequences. This man's actions while commendable in a few ways is jail worthy simply because he played with lives of other's without their consent, all the while not completely understanding the consequences of the changes he's made. He forced the risks on other's while he'd benefit immensely if the gamble paid off (along with humanity). I don't understand the first thing about this field of science but I doubt such extreme jumps and risks are necessary for progressing it.

CCP handing out a jail sentence is the right call and should have nothing to do with outside influence, publicity, or technology. Letting this particular crime go will set up a precedence that'll eventually be abused.

Lol, someone in the comment section said " Trump: China stole the brains from us " in a sarcastic way. I was thinking the reverse is true. The U.S. has been "stealing" brains from the rest of the world since around the middle of the last century.

On a side note, Iran is one of the only 3 countries (the others being China, Taiwan) that have all 5 participants scoring Gold Medal in a competition.

Well, despite the stealing, China still has the world's top academic institutions in physics, chemistry, live science, and environmental science, and depends on who you ask, China also has quite a few good engineering schools. So nowadays, China not only has by far the world's largest STEM graduates, it also has world's top academic institutions. I don't think Huawei will lose its lead easily, and I don't think China will be behind in the semiconductor industry forever.

thought it'd been operational for some time, but perhaps something got lost in translation:

I don't know how popular TomTom nowadays. But Huawei has signed deals with them to develop mapping and navigation apps to compete with Google.

TomTom closes deal with Huawei for use of maps and services: spokesman

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch navigation and digital mapping company TomTom on Friday said it has closed a deal with China’s Huawei Technologies for the use of its maps and services in smartphone apps.

Huawei was forced to develop its own operating system for smartphones, after it was effectively blacklisted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration last year out of concerns over national security.

This banned Huawei from using Google’s official Android operating system, along with widely used apps such as Google Maps, in new phones.

The deal with TomTom means Huawei can now use the Dutch company’s maps, traffic information and navigation software to develop apps for its smartphones.

TomTom spokesman Remco Meerstra said the deal had been closed some time ago but had not been made public by the company.

Meerstra declined to provide further details of the agreement.

TomTom, which is moving away from selling devices to offering software services, sold its telematics division to Japan’s Bridgestone last year to focus on its digital map-linked businesses.

They need to use Beidou GNS and Chinese GIS interfaces.

Beidou is the best of the bunch at the moment but only for China and regional applications. Global coverage is inferior to GPS but the geomatics and onboard technologies are all significantly better than Galileo, Glonass, and GPS. But coverage is still mostly limited to the Asia Pacific region at the moment. This means partnering commercially with western businesses can be problematic even if the political hurdles are somehow overcome.

GPS gets a pass because it is so much older and the Americans are now overhauling the entire constellation and technology behind it to allow for the same cm accuracy and two way communication. Galileo suffers from European bureaucracy and Glonass isn't getting anywhere near as much investment as Beidou. India's I'm not sure has totally gotten over their atomic clock design issues plus number of satellites are woeful still.

All Chinese phones should have this. Not just Huawei and Honor, but Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Pocophone, Realme, Redmi, Meizu, Nubia, and possibly other brands as well, like Nokia.

Go to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Look for an app called GPS Test. Install it.

The app will show you satellites for the following that your phone is using:

NAVSTAR (USA)
GLONASS (Russia)
Galileo (EU)
Beidou/COMPASS (China)
QZSS (Japan)
IRNSS (India)

So Japan and India has GPS satellites too? Yes, but not a lot.

Google Pixel phones will use both NAVSTAR and GLONASS but not the rest. The Chinese phones will use all of them. I don't know what Apple and Samsung uses.

Whether you are using Google Maps, or Waze, or playing Pokemon Go, your phone is relying on all these satellites.

Thanks. Works great on Oppo and Huawei phones.
