Bloomberg) -- China signaled it’s ready to unleash tariffs as high as 25% on imported cars with large engines, as trade tensions escalate with the US and European Union.

In addition to the jab at the car trade, China has recently hinted it could impose tit-for-tat levies on European wine and dairy products, and begun an investigation into European exports of brandy.

Chinese brands are already making sports cars and luxury cars with large engines.

BYD is far and away the largest job creator in China in the past 4 years

China's HDT industry is electrifying pretty quickly

Top imported models, a lot from Benz & Porsche. Actually also Lexus. But in this case when it comes to counter tariffs, going after these expensive ICE cars is a good idea

BYD plant in Thailand will start production soon.

I just had a look at a BYD Seal EV in real life and it was surprisingly compact looking

On paper it's a big car but in real life it looks really compact from outside. Somehow feels even smaller than a Hyundai Elantra.

I like it since I prefer smaller cars, but I think this might be why it doesn't sell well in China (where people prefer big)

There is no Chinese car brands in the US so far. But 76% of Americans younger than 40 would consider purchasing Chinese car brands. Maybe the 100% tariff will not be enough for the US regime in the future, considering how inexpensive some Chinese EVs are, such as the BYD Seagull.

Millennials are ready to go all in on Chinese cars, despite privacy concerns

A vast majority of young Americans would consider a Chinese brand, according to a new study

“A surprising number of American consumers are familiar with Chinese car brands even though none are sold here currently,” Ed Kim, the president and chief analyst at AutoPacific, said in a statement. “This is especially true among savvy Millennials and Gen Z, who would be the most likely to consider acquiring a vehicle from a Chinese brand.”
