if local brands can't survive, they deserve to die. Japanese brands will die in China over time. Not going to be overnight. They have a huge dealership network who are willing to heavily discount to unload inventory.
This feels somewhat like 1980's deja vu when US was fighting against Japan for its auto market. Back then Japan won the auto war by applying Deming's quality control and designing common-sense middle-class cars. But US ultimately won the political battle. But still to this date, majority of highly educated American middle-class prefer Japanese cars over domestic brands.
When Obama was running for President of the US, he said he was going to be known as the green President. Was it because he cared about the environment so much? No. He thought the US was going to dominate green technologies and there would be internationals laws forced upon the world to abide by thus the US would make all the money until he found out China was going to make all the money and on the turn of dime, he went out of his way to prevent any furthering of any environmental laws because China was going to make all the money. So his plan was to force the world especially in the developing world to have to buy more expensive US green tech whether they liked it or not.
Fast forward to today and Europe is suffering energy supply issues and now are reopening coal plants. And they were going to force the world to buy expensive Western green technology whether they liked it or not, whether they could afford it or not... no exceptions... except for themselves when they're in dire straights.
And now what do we have here? They're afraid of Chinese domination of superior Chinese EVs when they were going to force the world to buy more expensive and less efficient Western green tech... No exceptions. What's the difference here? China ain't forcing them to do anything. China ain't forcing them to buy cheaper and better green technology for EVs.
They are in a terrible bind and have no choke points in EV supply chain that they can use to stop, hurt or slow China. This feels somewhat like 1980's deja vu when US was fighting against Japan for its auto market. Back then Japan won the auto war by applying Deming's quality control and designing common-sense middle-class cars. But US ultimately won the political battle. EV is more of a lost cause for US vis-a-vis China. It is no longer subjective factors such as car design, quality control or fuel consumption. It is rather fundamental factors such as enabling technologies in battery and ICT software integration, and particularly in EV supply chain and eco-system. On top of all those enabling factors, China is by far the largest and fast growing EV market, as opposed to the US market position back in 80's.
In the current global market transition from ICE to EV, China is said to possess 70% battery production and 60% EV unit market share. There was a Chinese video last week that said, by around 2030, China's EV battery production capacity would be 3x the EV cars sold. EV battery smells like a repeat of Solar story. By then, non of other EV battery making countries would be competitive.
So US/EU are going to use geopolitics to rein in Chinese dominance in the EV supply chain. But this time is different from 80's. China's current go-global strategy is to dominate domestic market first, expand RCEP second, penetrate EU third, then peek into US at last. There is no Plaza Accord equivalent for US to stop China EV advancement. The only pragmatic way for US to get even on EV is to induce some consolidation among SAIC/GM, BYD/Ford or other innovative combinations. Just look at how Rivian and Lucid have been doing, and it is abundantly clear to me that American EV startups will not catch up unless they do a Tesla-esque move.
EV comes down to a Tesla-and-China story. Germany has a chance, but politics may ruin it.
Impressive build-up. Could serve as a backup source of energy in case of emergency/crisis.
