CATL is the real champion here. Tesla pioneered the modern EV industry by setting up expectations and some industry standards but when we're talking about the technology, a great part of it is the battery itself. The motors are far less interesting or exotic and the self driving stuff is basic and unimpressive when it comes to hardware but if the batteries are the right arm, the software for autopilot is its left arm. Not quite smoothed out but will become the case in coming decades. Again Tesla sort of did a quantum leap over what the established players had - Lexus mostly, but these days, the software is relatively ubiquitous and requires data to smooth out and of course testing and real life application. All of them China's providing and doing.
Actually on review, while autopilot isn't entirely allowed by laws, China has long had self driving buses in test zones running pretty successfully. Delivery vehicles too and already having a decent internet of things networked to everything a planner can dream of certainly helps get it there fast.
