There was a similar case of a Hongkonger who killed his girlfriend in Taiwan then escaped to Hongkong. There is no agreement between Hongkong and Taiwan, so the guy is free.

I believe the issue was that there was no agreement between HK and the mainland at the time. Technically Taiwan is a province of China (as opposed to HK's SAR status), so he would have to be have to be extradited under the authority of the Mainland. Taiwan (and Tsai/DPP) could not accept this because it would mean going along with One China Policy.

The only well known similar case before that was of the gangster who kidnapped Li Ka Shing's son who was arrested and tried in the mainland and subsequently executed. It is atypical to be tried in the mainland for HK crimes. The difference was that there was no extradition as he was arrested in Guangdong.

The person won't be handed over to Australia if he/she is Chinese citizen even if there is a treay. I did not check all but only extradition treaties with Vietnam and Brazil. Both treaties forbid extradition of own citizens. The person will be trialed in China.

If the person is Australian citizen, China can expel him/her out of China, BUT it is up to Australia how to manage to get him/her back to Australia without breaking China's law and international law.

That’s actually what lit the fuse for the 2019 fiasco.

Ai Weiwei says West lacks moral authority to criticise Beijing on rights

Ai, speaking to Reuters in London, said he has previously argued that Western leaders visiting China should openly denounce the country's human rights abuses before striking business deals with the world's second-largest economy.

"But today I changed my mind, completely," Ai said. "The West (is) not even (in a) position to accuse China. (They must) just check on their record (of) what they did on international human rights, (their) freedom of speech record."

Ai's remarks come as Keir Starmer makes a four-day visit to China, the first by a UK leader in eight years, aimed at improving relations despite concerns over espionage and human rights.

Wow, imagine getting cancelled so hard by Western media outlets for daring to criticize Israel that you come full circle to realize how hypocritical the West is....

I'm still waiting for this "I wei too much" guy to criticize Israel wrong doings in Palestine. I guess his AIPAC money didn't go far enough and now he's "home".

After the Oracle takeover I noticed that there has been no real impact to Wumao content. Those are in fact as rampant, if not more so, than before, and I’ve even had Japanese language Maoist content shoved on my list on multiple occasions (so I guess the algorithm sucks now???). What is noticeable is that there is zero Palestine related content suggested to me. Make of that what you will.
