Serious hat for a moment: While the proximate cause of this release was the latest bout of Indian fake news about some concocted incident in South Tibet, I think the underlying cause is that the PLA feels that WTC is now at adequate readiness levels and can blunt any Indian attempt at escalation. The whole situation is locked down.
Another comparison photo...

Suppose instead of now, these photos were released more or less immediately after the incident. Would that have lead down a path that would eventually lead to war?

I don’t think so. Instead, it would have prevented the escalations near Lake PangongTso because it would’ve cooled the heads of Indian civilians and by extension, the civilian government. When Pakistan publicized the Abinandan footage, did that lead to escalation and war?

Probably not, but it would have made negotiations more difficult and the PLA would have lost the leverage of threatening to release them. Also, China was not prepared for wholesale war in the Himalayas and needed time to build up its forces. Now that these two factors are moot, all it needed was an opportune moment to release them which the latest Indian fake news disgorge provided.

Hmmm that's a good point with Abinandan, hopefully in the future PLA is more open about such footages.

But China ultimately disengaged from Pangong and restored status quo ante there. It is also important to consider that China released significant footage of the clash right before pang ong disengagement. This is important context, considering India and China are holding talks to complete disengagement at the last 2020 friction point tomorrow
