Re: New JF-17/FC-1 Fighter Aircraft thread

Indeed. The current version of the JF-17 can use laser guided bombs, anti-ship and anti-radiation missiles. However its maximum payload isn't that impressive, so it can't drop as many bombs as say... the F-16. The dedicated ground attack version would be optimized for higher payload, instead of maneuverability.

Also, note the emphasis on the phrase, "top export customer". If I'm not mistaken, it can be interpreted to be Pakistan, So in effect, Pakistan is just an export customer and may not have as much contribution in technology in the JF-17. The aircraft is apparently fully Chinese.
In the defense industry, a customer is the organization who uses the aircraft. If China opts for FC-1, then PLAAF would be another customer. The USAF is the biggest customer of the F-16, that doesn't mean the US was not involved in making the F-16.

Nice reply londo morali..

i was trying to look for specs of the current radar on 'thunder', if i remember recorrectly, it ended up with the ability to track 6 target with 2 targets engagement.

secondly, does anybody know if sd-10 has been tested with Jf-17 yet?

I think as crobato said, the JF-17 is limited to only rudimentary A2G munitions like rockets and dumb bombs and not anti-ship or anti-radiation missiles. That is probably because the latter two require more radar modes.

So the JF-17 is currently an air-superiority fighter.

The phrase says export customer, which presumably is Pakistan, as the plane is not exported to China. It also says 'design requirement', which cannot be from any other nation than Pakistan, because other than Pakistan and China, no other potential customer has a stake in specifying the design.

Why debate semantics of a word?

All sources I read states it is multi role meaning use of precision guided weapons. If you and Crobato have evidence to say otherwise then I like to hear.

Laser guided bombs likely, but ARMs and AshMs are not it for now but in the near future, with ARMs first before AshMs. The potential capability is there, this plane is designed with a modular architecture in mind and many things may already built into it that can exploited in the future. But for now until I see a photo of a JF-17 with an ARM or an AshM, I would say the capability is just reserved for the moment.

Nice four plane formation. What happened to the plane with the flag colors? Has it returned to the grey yet?

(and probably took em too, so all credits to him). Very small pictures but they do show red-green in the formation of four. They were also seen doing a "bomb burst" (picture by wajahat on

This is interesting i wasn't expecting PAF to retain the red-green in that paint scheme for so long given it is part of weapons integration at PAC. Maybe they repainted one for the occasion again.

Very small pictures but i guess it's better than nothing. Hopefully we will see better on 23 Mrach.

I guess its still the same plane as before that had the greed and red color. No reason to remove it even during weapons testing and integration. That means at least five JF-17s were participating in that air show event.

The planes really look nice I should say.

A question comes to my mind; the other day we saw a picture of four planes formation in all gray, why today there is one in red-green color? What does this mean? The totally have five? Or somebody has used their magic to change the color of the plane?

They should have a total of six. Two last year, one that was repainted red and green, and then four early this year.
