Jf-17 Maws

Crobato,
Whats the source of this image of JF-17 MAWS? The knobs look like the ones on side panels but i just could not find this display/knobs anywhere in the existing cockpit pictures.

Circa the usual places where I find these pictures, the military forums of sina.com.cn, military.china.com, and junshi or Xilu. These are very big and popular sites, full of full of pictures of not just Chinese military, but everyone and everything else.

I think the MAWS is something shared between the J-10, J-11B and JF-17 but the way its displayed and controlled on the cockpit might differ somewhat. The picture may also be a prototype, and the actual version may also vary.

I think... something shared between... might differ somewhat... Prototype...

It means that there is no real answer. It reminds me of the discussion that Pakistan gets inferior downgraded planes and China gets latest technology. Unfortunately we have seen opposite information cause we would tend to believe that based on seniority.

what's the different between MAW and IRST?
new geneation of IRST aside from passive detection of aircraft and missile, can also act as MAW to detect missile plumes.
according to aviation week, F-35 and F-22 use 6 IRST to provide 360 degree of passive detection and tracking of incoming target.

IRST is infrared. MAWS is the same principle as IRST but it can also be purely optical and ultraviolet like in this case. Thus when they are located near the tail like what you see with the J-10/J-11B/JF-17, they are not distracted by the heat of the exhaust like IRST.

UV and visual spectrum can make a better case of differentiating a rocket plume from a jet plume because rocket propellants will generate their own spectral signature compared to kerosene burning.

I saw this aerospace daily article posted by Huitong on the 18th. Didn't catch it until now. Anyhow, basically saying when JF-17 fully fulfills the top export customer's design requirement, it will begin development on the ground attack version, twin seater version, extend the lifetime of technology, use time difference to lower cost and risk, expand to fighter market in the 3rd world. This August, the new fighter came to review, experts from all of the country came to CAC to study. Seems like they were impressed.

As I mentionned in my blog, it looks like PLAAF is looking for the ground attack version.
I've come across similar reports in Pakistani media. Does it mean that JF-17 has no ground attack capability, or in other words, is it only an air interceptor currently ?

Also, note the emphasis on the phrase, "top export customer". If I'm not mistaken, it can be interpreted to be Pakistan, So in effect, Pakistan is just an export customer and may not have as much contribution in technology in the JF-17. The aircraft is apparently fully Chinese.

No. Every plane has a secondary ground attack capability, that is capable of delivering bombs and rockets. This is a basic requirement in all PLAAF fighters, and the JF-17 should have it by inheritance. What I think it means is something even more dedicated to the ground attack mission, like a more specialized version with even greater payloads and much wider range of ordinance.
