Japan's other island dispute heats up too.

Japan scrambles fighters after Russian jets approach island

Japan's military scrambled fighters Thursday after two Russian SU-27 jets entered Japanese airspace off Rishiri Island near the tip of Japan's northernmost Hokkaido Island, according to the country's Defense Ministry.

The Russian jets left Japanese airspace without incident after a little more than a minute, the ministry said.

The incident occurred near territory disputed by Japan and Russia since the end of World War II.

Japanese officials lodged an official protest with Russia over the incident, Japan's Kyodo news service reported.

Russian officials denied their jets entered Japanese airspace, the Russian Interfax news agency reported.

The incident is the first since 2008, Kyodo reported.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has made a priority of resolving the longstanding dispute with Russia over what it calls the Northern Territories and Russia calls the Kuril Islands, according to Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun.

Russia and Japan have squabbled over the islands -- Etorofu, Kunashiri, Shikotan and Habomai -- since the end of WWII, when Russian forces took over the islands, according to the Japanese Foreign Affairs Ministry. Because of the dispute, the two countries never signed a peace treaty following the war.

Funny how whenever an island dispute flares up between China and one of it's neighbours, the western media absolutely have to mention all of China's other territorial disputes, but when Japan has a dispute, they never think to mention that Japan has territorial disputes with every one of it's immediate neighbours.

Well, that's the same down in the SCS area as well, hardly any mention of any other disputes amongst the other claimants or their respective aggressive actions that are destabilizing. As for the US govt, I find them disingenuous when advising China that they need to ratchet down their posturing for they say very little to their allies on toning down their respective postures. If the US govt can only say this to their allies behind closed doors, then it's not very neutral one bit because the US govt isn't certainly advising China behind closed doors and adding to the media circus.

Russia doing something similar of their own? Is it another regular incident, or done so to provoke the Japanese sentiments to flare upwards(which will naturally burn towards China first)

It rather reinforce the view (to which I subscribe) that there is a high degree of harmonisation on multiple fronts with regards o the Sino-Russian Foreign Policy.

A gentle reminder perhaps to Tokyo as to who it is exactly that is isolated in the immediate neighbourhood.

Agreed, I think people underestimate the degree of China-Russia cooperation.

Found this piece in the Asahi Shinbun with a nice graphic.

It appears the incident took place 180 km north of Diaoyutai, closer to the Chunxiao gas fields but west of them. And considering the distance separation between ships is 3 km, this would seem to indicate the Japanese ships were within the Chinese EEZ side or pretty darn close to it and overall, being closer to China.

Also...

Another government source suggested the incident was unlikely to have resulted in an actual attack.

"The gun barrel was not directed toward the Self-Defense Forces destroyer," the official said.

I keep wondering, isn't 3km too short for missile? The ship's main or even the CIWS should be in used for such a distance!

It's time to hear some voice from the China side:

It generally said that the Chinese vessel didn't aim its radar at Japanese ship, instead, the dangerous moves were Japanese vessel and aircraft that follow Chinese vessel at a very closed distance.

Agreed, I think people underestimate the degree of China-Russia cooperation.

The only reason China turned down UN resolution on Syria is to support Russia, possibly looking for Russia doing the same thing if anything happen in North Korea.

The real achievement for the 4 , 5 years is that China really starts to strengthening it's national interests and part friends, enemies, and frienimies. (I think it has a lot to do with Taiwan no-longer being the center piece of strategic planning) No more everyone is a strategic partner and "you hurt our feelings" rabbit diplomacy. Western media calls it mistake that wastes previous, but I think it's a step in the right direction. People will be nice to you when you cut and offering them your own flesh, and they will also happily watch you die from your own wounds.

Anyone who takes seriously these reports, or worse use them to pass any kind of judgements, where they don't even provide the most basic of info like the locations & circumstances of the incidents will not be convinced of anything other than what they want to believe. The same amount of effort needed to convince these guys can better be used for something more productive like building a fleet of aircraft carriers etc. :)

Honestly?I agree, and what you say works both ways. How many here (without informed knowledge) saw the article and immediately dismissed it as groundless? The least biased course of action is to not judge either side until more information on the incident makes itself available.

It's very hard to do this because the thread topic and its implications is so close to many people's hearts, and dredges up the specters of nationalism. Its why these threads are so ripe for closing. Its already present, If I chose to contest certain unsupported and smearing statements other posters have said, I'm sure the thread would be closed shortly.

As of now what we have is a basic 'he said, she said' situation. Japan says it happened, China says it didn't.

First priority is to make sure whatever happened doesn't blow things out of control (which others have pointed to as being very unlikely at this point after the event).

As for Russia's own overflight, I think it was just a coincidence. It's not like Russia would go to war with Japan over the the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands (unless someone thinks it would?), and it already has the Kuril islands. Why would it bring the spotlight on the issue at this time when Japan is so conveniently distracted by China? For unstated solidarity? What concessions?
