................
J-20= AL-31F M2 145 kN Thrust.

It's a nice improvement over AL-31F, But the status for this engine is : In tests. And a little disappointed is not WS-XX if this is true........ :(

That's why this J20 using AL31 thing should be taken with a grain of salt. Using the M2, an engine in test ?? The AL31 crowd always said using AL31 was because it's more mature than WS10.
What I always say from day 1 is if indeed it's AL31, everyone and their dog would have heard something definite from the Russians by now, instead of just speculations.

Possibly because that particular Al-31 variant may have greater thrust compared to higher thrust WS-10 variants and had finished development earlier, or maybe CAC just has a good deal with the Russians for Al-31s, or maybe they're cheaper while having sufficient performance, or who knows. There's a whole multitude of equally plausible reasons, and Chinese engine development is so opaque and rarely updated that we really just don't know.

Personally I think it's a bit early to rule out what engine 2016 is not using.

Assuming wikipedia is accurate on engines.

Su-27, Shenyang J-11, Sukhoi Su-30MKK = AL-31F 123 kN Thrust.

J-10= AL-31FN 127 kN Thrust.

J-10B= AL-31FN Series 3 137 kN Thrust.

Su-35= AL-41F1S (117S) 142 kN Thrust.

PAK FA=AL-41F1 (117) 147 kN Thrust.

J-20= AL-31F M2 145 kN Thrust.

That wiki article requires editing. Whoever wrote that article is confusing kgf with kN. Here are the Salut articles:

(12700 kgf that is ~125 kN or 28000 lbf)

(13700 kgf that is 134 kN or 30000 lbf)

(14500 kgf that is 142 kN or 32000 lbf)

We also have to assume Russians are willing to clear a 140+ kN class engine. So far the highest thrust engine available is the 134 kN AL-31FN Series 3 engine.

Well, the question what is more important.

The moderate increase of thrust with the lastest export engines or gaining experience with domestic produced and designed ones.
The J-20 would be underpowered with both engines until China gets the WS-15 on the J-20.
