stabs, canards, wings, how fitting for a bad guy role

Well Paint, I hope some of you more aeronautically inclined gentlemen will read today's, Feb. 5th, 2014, Air Force Magazine, Daily Report, and read the little blurb entitled, Gates versus the Air Force. Sec Gates famously predicted that China would have NO operational fifth gen aircraft until the early 2020s, when China flew the J-20 during his visit, it was proof positive that Gates was/is a total little grey long eared jack-axe. On the right side of the page, is the complete text of the article, in which Gates details of "sacking two very bright gentlemen in Air Force Leadership, who were brave proponents of the F-22, in spite of Gates outright opposition to the F-22 in particular and the Air Force in general. Gates is a typically ignorant "ground-pounder" who had/has NO CLUE, about tactical "airpower". If Jeff or someone else could link the article, it does detail Gates assertion that the J-20 would not be a factor until the 2020s, Secretary Gates is a real bad guy, small minded and petulant, as his book is proving, Gates only loyalty, is to Gates. Anyway the first flight of the J-20 was timed by Chengdu to illustrate to Sec Gates that his "arrogance" was indeed just that, and to take the "wind" out of what was likely a "preachy, condescending diatribe", that seems to fit this current crews "style"..

anyway the first flight of 2011 coming up after the Chinese New Year will put another nail in the coffin of Gates honor??? duty???? really, I am disgusted all over again.

Banned Idiot
It looks to me like the revision to air intake on the 2011 would significantly enhance the pilot's downward visibility over his shoulder.

That might be a main reason for the revision rather than some aerodynamic concern.

The main reason cited for the even larger change in the intake and forward fuselage design between YF-22 prototype and pre-production F-22 (Intake substantially shortened, cockpit moved forward 18 inches) was also improvements to pilots downward visibility over the shoulder.

Gates wasn't wrong when he gave the estimate to be around 2020. That was also the estimate of many on this forum when we assumed they would wait for the WS-15. Even then though the earliest date we're probably looking at is a revision to 2018 at best, which isn't that far off from the original.

Given that the J-20 had no slope to begin with, I wonder if the changes to the aerodynamics are greater than for the F-22. Would be really interested to see some wind tunnel comparisons one day.

Yeah, Gates was the president of Texas A&M for a short while. He promised to take A&M to a new level when he started and started a spending spree by initiating so many programs, but left office only shortly after when he was asked to become the sec of Defense. He left a huge mess at A&M that they are still cleaning up now.

Actually Gates is wrong about almost everything he did, and he may have been intending to kill the J-20, and Pak-Fa as well as the F-22, did you read the article in the Air Force Magazine?????

I believe the Chinese first flighted the J-20 during Gates visit for a very definite reason, and it most surely did send a message. Killing the F-22, may have been a move similar to our nuclear weapons destruction, cutting B-52s and ICBMS, destroying silos etc. While I may agree with some of Gates thoughts about this current administration, to make the many insulting and defamatory statements are not the acts of a statesman, but of a petty, small minded narcissist. There is a way to dis-agree with the boss, up to and including resignation, I think his book is petty and classless, but my real concern is to have others read the article in AFM, to see his bias against the Air Force, and its core leadership???? just unreal now back on topic.....

I'm not going to go through the litany of SecDef Gate's record but if I did I'm sure I would find many things I both agree and disagree with. That's not the point of my comment though. On the date of the J-20, I don't think Gates was wrong. I have always understood various estimates of the J-20's by the Pentagon and US China Commission (and Sec Gates's statement) to be IOC dates, and the 2020 date was both a respectable estimate at that time and not really that far off from any revised estimates given the changes in assumptions we've had to make since the J-20's reveal.
