The image confirmed one thing for me. It appears that only the lips of the intakes are canted downwards and the transition behind it remains flat.

Just out of curiosity, what was the purpose for the intake change? If anything the new design decreases the amount of air going into the engines slightly. Is this RCS or aerodynamics related?

Supposedly creates lift at subsonic speed. But I only heard this from someone else.

Could be, but I doubt it. The grass blades are in different shades, color, and sizes in accordance to the scale of those planes. The concrete panels or sections are also of various shades.

Could be composite image with background added on separately

It does decrease the amount of air and hence cooling, they want to UP the Temp in the hot section, which should increase efficiency and promote a more complete combustion, and hence greater thrust. They canted it downward to maintain airflow at higher angles of attack, in order to avoid an overheat in slow flight, it is a solution to several concerns in one redesign. Mig 29 had brought up that many aircraft do use a variable intake ramp to tailor the airflow, but a fixed ramp is simpler and possibly has lower RCS, I believe the Eng is a proponent of fixed intakes and had stated that they could tailor it to achieve the desired effect???? but I don't want to put words in Eng's mouth, and my apologies in advance Eng??

I had no idea the fuselage of J-8II is so much more area ruled than J-8I.

My pure guess is that the change helps the vortices from the chin to pass over the aircraft. Also, don't let the change fool you into thinking the intake area has decreased. The engineers could add back the missing area by widening the intakes. This would be much harder to notice since the intakes are so long.
