Nice to see proof of J-10s carrying/dropping LGBs. I wonder when this was taken and how long LT-2 has been in "service" with PLAAF and J-10 specifically.

Interesting to see that plane wasn't carrying its own targeting pod but why do so when you have partner aircraft to laze -- both aircraft get to partake in the exercise and there's no reason to burden an aircraft with extra loads for training.

Now for FT and LS series :)

PLAAF exercise shows J-10A dropping laser-guided bombs on the Tibetan highlands

[Note: Thank you to HouShanghai for the video.]

Umm, are you sure those are LGBs in the vid? I have never seen LGBs released at such low altitude, and for good reasons. LGBs use control surfaces to maneuver, and if you drop them too low, they will not have enough time to maneuver themselves on target.

No, I am not positive.

However, I have two replies to your point.

1. In the video, the footage cuts away from the J-10 dropping the bombs. You do not actually see a continuous drop. Therefore, the altitude of the bomb drop is unknown.

2. HouShanghai indicated the bombs are LT2 in his video title. He understands Mandarin. I have to rely on his translation skills.

In case anyone is interested in learning more about China's LT2 laser-guided bomb, I have provided a reference source.

The J-10 probably dropped laser-guided bombs

Let's examine the other side of the argument.

Let's suppose that the J-10 did not drop LT2 laser-guided bombs, because the altitude was too low. That is the crux of your argument.

How do we explain the precision strike by two dumb bombs onto a clearly defined and "circled" target? That is either a very lucky dumb-bomb hit or a laser-guided bomb strike.

In my opinion, the J-10 video most likely showed a precision-guided bomb strike.

There was nothing in the video audio that identified what weapons were used.

The bases I used for judging height was based on the fact that the videos appears to have been shot from the ground, so to get that kind of definition, the J10 could not have been flying very high.

All LGB release videos I have seen have been shot from other chase aircraft.

As for dumb bombs, well you might be surprised at how accurate they can be at low altitude with modern fire control radar. I remember seeing clips of F16As bullseyeing tanks with dumb bombs. And this was in training as well as operationally during Desert Storm.

The problem is that in order to get low enough to have a good hit probability with dumb bombs would also place the plane within the kill range of most MANPADs and mobile AAA. The biggest advantage of LGBs is that they can achieve better accuracy from much higher altitude, thus reducing the risk to the plane without having to resort to carpet bombing to take out a target.

Now, the first photo posted by Deino already proves that J10s are LGB operational, so whether this particular video is actually the one that showed the use of LGBs is rather immaterial.
