You can't complain if people correctly guess what your views are, even if it's through luck.
You're accusing all the protesters, or indeed all HongKongese, of being bad. You're doing exactly what you don't want done to you.
Also, let's look at what you say. You support the CCP to the hilt, and the protesters would argue that the CCP has hurt them and other HongKongese by ordering a crackdown and refusing to acknowledge they had any complaints.
I'd like to imagine a Chinese police chief or HK superintendent doing the same thing in public when there was civil unrest as this US Sheriff did, but it would be so fantastical I can't do it. I could just about imagine it if they were speaking to some Triad goons about to attack random civilians.
You support America/UK governments to the hilt. You're accusing all HKPF members of being bad. You're doing exactly what you said @AssassinsMace should not do.
There are plenty of videos, pictures, articles in this thread on policemen being spit on, yelled at to their faces, and of course beaten. There was one video that still stands out to me of a "protester" repeatedly yelling "F* your mother, black police" in Cantonese right in the face of a police officer. The officer calmly responded and told him he can say what he likes, but should move on.
Also, the Hong Kong protests did not start out about independence. It was the extradition law. But because the Hong Kong authorities and Beijing handled it so badly, some protesters have gone as far as to campaign for independence. But the independence movement is still a minority in Hong Kong.
As for the old HK flag, if some protesters are unhappy with the status quo it's not surprising if they look at the past with rose-tinted glasses.
Final reminder, China signed a treaty with the UK for the return of the whole of Hong Kong (only the New Territories were originally to return in 1997). Rather than divide the city, the UK negotiated a treaty in good faith to give up control but for it to enjoy 50 years of autonomy. It's perfectly reasonable that Hong Kongese would call on the UK to intervene if Beijing is breaking the treaty by undermine said autonomy.
Beijing handled it badly? The fact that the protests went on for so long is hard undeniable proof that there is
1. No crackdown
2. Freedom of speech
3. Hands off approach by central government
Look at the age of some of these protesters, they cannot "look back", an 18 year old never lived in the colonial times, a 25 year old never worked in colonial times. Please tell me how many non-white governors elected by HK people there were before 1997? Please tell me how many non-white HK Police Commissioners were there? Let's not pretend that life was so great and free under the British.
As someone mentioned, you can't pretend that this "treaty" is some kind of kind gesture. HK was taken by force and returned only by equal (potential) show of force.
This is reality. I’m rather sick of hearing this kind of sanctimonious, moralizing BS about US/UK/democracy being somehow morally superior in some way, especially when it comes to HK.
