Re: Chinese General news resource thread

What??? You should definitely be proud of the behavior you listed and not coddle others' jealousy and prejudice. Why should any rich person not do the things you listed? They are all legitimate investments or personal purchases.
be proud of making middle income and low bracket unable to purchase houses?

honestly I am starting to become quite disappointed with this forum.

Re: Chinese General news resource thread

But as you say, its not just happening in HK, but all over the world. Canada's democracy hasn't really safeguarded their property prices from Chinese money has it?

And believe, as bad as rising property prices are, falling home values are far far worse.

The best, and only effective solution to the affordable housing shortfall is to build lots of new, low end homes and cap their prices. That's not something democracy or free markets will ever do. In fact, the only government with the means and the competence to pull something like that off is the very one you are protesting against.

I'm only picking on you saying that's something a democracy will never do. A democratic government that cares to provide affordable housing will do it. Don't blame democracy for the free market's fault.

Re: Chinese General news resource thread

It doesn't surprise me that the majority of the people protesting are there because of economic reasons. Its just a small core of people that are protesting over ideological ones.

One of the problems that Hong Kong is facing is that the Chinese RMB has gained more than 25% in value since 2005 while the value of the HKD stayed were it was. HK imports most of its goods from China as HK doesn't have a large manufacturing or agricultural base. So that has helped to push up the cost of living in HK. Monetary reforms could help in this matter. They can either re-calibrate the peg with the USD or give up the peg completely and either go for a basket of currencies that includes both the USD and the RMB or set up its own central bank and have a fully independent currency of its own. I don't know about HK politics as to why this hasn't happened yet or what the chances are that this will happen in the future.

The high property prices in HK comes from rich Chinese speculators investing their money in HK real estate. But I think that's going to come to an end as China is tightening its monetary policies. House prices in China is already falling and those in Hong Kong are set to follow. And of course with the HK monetary authorities having their hands and feet tight up to the US Federal Reserves means it has inherited the 0% interest rate policy from the FED. That has also helped to feed the speculative frenzy in the territory.

Wow, you are 100% wrong with that statement. Hong Kong's development and prosperity throughout its existence is all due to the city being a gateway to trading with China. And Hong Kong was and is only a world class city for business and wealth, not for culture or philosophy, not for science or technology, and apparently not for education or awareness about itself.

go ahead and discredit my culture, a culture you know nothing about

You're tired and I'll give you a break as to why you're confused, read my post again. You're making assumptions, changing topics, and not seeing what I posted at all.

I am a middle class guy who grew up in HK and was moved "astronaut" style by my parents to the US as a high school student after the 1989 crackdown and have kept a close tab on developments in HK since despite staying in the US.

There is a segment of the HK population who has blind prejudice against the PRC and to some extent the HKSAR governments when they should really be looking at themselves, all parts of HK society (it's more than just the people and the government, big business anyone?), and the rest of the world to see how HK and HKers should adapt to succeed in a changing world.
