Re: Chinese sub thread

I can't comment on that, but I don't believe the model comes out from blue, especially shown in the hand of chief SSBN designer.

Another model recently posted by one of the "shrimp", very interesting. Said it's 096 and made by Bohai Shipyard. I don't believe you build a 24k gold coated model just for fun.

well, I have to say that you can't take what the "shrimp" say for facts. I've seen plenty of times where they contradict themselves. Everything they say have to be read with a word of caution, especially when it comes to top secret stuff. As for the image you posted, i can't get it at all. Can you post it on imageshack or something like that?

I never said you take whatever they said, but they know a lot more than you. You really need to know the tone, the slang meaning of Chinese language so you will understand if they joke or are serious.

Re: Chinese sub thread

Of course you have to take everything (even peculiar posts on BBS) with a ´grain of salt´ dear tphuang...:D BUT as fishhead has pointed out correctly: this may be not ´bullet proof evidence´but it is certainly quite convincing. (Probably they cannot go further since they do not want invite some trouble..., :nono: )

As I have posted a couple of months earlier in this thread the theory about additional type 092 mod's existing has spread in western expert circles for some time now and without doubt Chinas's waters will see several new nuclear subs in the next two years. (Although the exact type and whether a type 096 will be among them is indeed subject of an intense debate! )

In my view the Pentagon is very keen to keep their actual knowledge about PLAN sub development for themselves since they currently want to use their superior intelligence for achieving an array of objectives like managing their expanding military relationship with Japan and trying to induce China to ´open up´and begin some kind of secret bilateral dialogue with the US about their evolving nuclear capabilities. Furthermore declassifying more information about PLA in general seems not to fit into current policy planning of the Bush administration and just a look into the meagre and uninformative annual report to Congress about China's military confirms this fact.
(...just compare this poor 50 pages crap with the shiny 600-700 pages volumes about Soviet military power published back in the 80's!:D )

Interpreting Chinese military BBS is a real science, like reading a code book without any specific clear fixed rules. You can't trust any words there, they're full of faked info and photo, bluffing, distracting claims, garbage talk, cheating, hoax........

But who can deny almost all real truth coming out from there? The strangest thing may be when you realize it's a truth, you can't tell who really said that specifically, that's the whole porpose of the BBS.

Pay attention to this, who dares to claim it's a "Chinese Navy SSBN" and put the words on the plate, coated it with 24k gold? They've started to talk 096 now, 094 is a past tense.

Re: Chinese sub thread

^ Now now that's a 24 tube submarine. I haven't read any specs that indicate Jin-class carries 24 missiles, all say 16.

I don't think the Jin-class looks anything like the gold model, nor the one in the Google Earth images. But the model in front of Mr. Huang seems like a very early conception of Jin-class. Why?

All reports indicate Jin-class has a very advanced reactor and that the sub is very fast. (35+ knots in my opinion.) The hump design shown is not conducive to this kind of speed underwater. But the design shown in front of Mr. Huang is a lot more streamlined. Look also at the Akula class attack submarine for hydrodynamic streamlining.

Also, when the photograph of the mysterious new submarine came out last year, people who thought this was Jin-class (rather than PS or improved Xia) believed the photo to be secretly taken and leaked. After all, it seems obvious China wouldn't want to reveal details about the Jin-class.

But by comparing the background in that photograph with Google Earth, we see that photograph was taken at the same facility, almost at the same location. So we can rule out that it was a secretly taken photograph, since the submarine was simply left in the open in a known submarine base. This implies that.... if it was a Jin-class.... China must have gone public with it last year!

Another possibility is that we have a problem with nomenclature. Some people are simply using the term "Jin-class" for any submarine that follows the Xia-class, regardless of whether it's a serial produced design or just an experimental one. In that sense, this submarine is a Jin-class... since you just defined it as such. But I don't think this submarine (whatever you want to call it) is the one that they're serial producing, it's just a test bed.

The nomenclature problem, I think, is similar to what's happened with the DF-31. I think China had the option of deploying an 8,000 km range DF-31 back in 2002-2003, the same one shown in the 1999 parades. At the time, they had a plan to follow up with an extended range DF-31A, with Topol-M like zig-zagging reentry vehicle -- and up to 12,000 km range.

Then they decided not to serial produce DF-31, and go straight to DF-31A. But the nomenclature problem stuck, and western sources kept looking for the DF-31. So the new mobile land missiles that have entered service are called DF-31 by western sources, when in fact they're really extended range ones -- DF-31A under the original specs.

The chief sub designer in the photo is 81 years old. :( No doubt a result of the cultural revolution when China lost an entire generation of scientists.
I'd think most top guys in the West are in their 50s or even younger.

I just read from Kanwa who claim that they got info of Type 096 SSBN planning and development been soon finished. Yup, 096, not 094.
