As the world faces a chip shortage dilemma, Chinese companies seem to see an opportunity.

Most of them are probably fabless gimmicks. Buy $200 pirated US cadence and synopsys softwares at black market and uses some open ips from opencores or got some ips from some companies.
Spend $30k to fab it out And claim their semiconductor companies. make some samples and try get funding from investors.

But only need few of them to be champions.

Also need more equipments related developers.

China develope EUV from scratch unlike ASML purchased expensive subcomponents everywhere. China first EUV 150 watts prototypes is within $250k budget.

Not sure where is that comment China had to spend hundred of billions on it. Make little sense from ASML engineer.

Quantity is always important to reach a critical mass.

Thats the often used strategy that China is using called "scatter-shot". First they open the field for competition, a lot of.companies are set up and then there is free for all, and then they wait of who will win...

After this cutthroat competition, the best companies will surface and they will get support from the Gov to expand and get "quality"
So basically China loves their "养蛊" technique? your description of "scatter-shot" really reminds me of the "养蛊" technique.

They will have busy years ahead just for import replacement alone.

But Chinese factories still buy high end machine tool from Japan and Germany. I don't know whether or not Japan and Germany involved in that 5 axis machine tool ban against China. If they involved....

Think about it yourself

"As the world’s largest machine tool market, the main business revenue of machine tools reached about $106 billion in 2018, with a year-on-year growth of 8.3% from the previous year. According to data from China Customs, imports valued $16.5 billion, up 8.5%, and exports valued $13.6 billion, up 16.8% from 2017. More than half of all high-end CNC machine tools and accessories were imported from Japan and Germany; fewer than 20 Chinese companies can provide medium and high-end CNC machine tools. Local industry experts expect that the demand for metal cutting, forming machine tools, and accessories will face challenges of continued growth in 2019."
High end cnc is not an issue. Read my post in another thread.
