Chinese elite have too much stake in these places. Just like how UK can't do shit to Russian oligarchs.

I have full faith in continuing trade relations because the elite will use average people like us as dogs to bark at the competition.

Everything's about the money.
@localizer ,

A further more punishment then a reconciliation, Beijing is scolding a child and that child had learned its lesson the hard way.

Indonesia has had issues with purchasing US weapons in the past. It is doubtful they would stop having other suppliers be it Russia or China. Just look at Egypt. Even with Uncle Sam giving them weapons essentially for free they got sick of always playing 2nd fiddle to Israel in terms of their air force and went back to buying Russian fighters.

I don't think the Bloomberg author even knows how much of Indonesian economy is dominated by ethnic Chinese. Whether it is 70+% or not, it doesn't matter much. It is more than high enough.

----------------------------

There’s a popular myth that the Chinese controls 70% of the Indonesian economy. This figure is often disputed though.

“….. the myth - that the Chinese constitute only 3.5% of the population, but control 70% of Indonesia's economy - "has been repeated and repeated so often now by the world press, that everybody - including those sympathetic to the plight of Chinese Indonesians - seem to believe it."

A 1995 study entitled Overseas Chinese Business Networks in Asia claimed that Chinese-Indonesians controlled about 73% of Indonesia's listed companies "by market capitalization." Thus by end-1993, they reportedly controlled about 68% of the country's "top 300 conglomerates and nine of the top 10 private sector groups."

But unfortunately, those who came across the Backman study reportedly failed to note what the phrase 'market capitalization' meant, which, quoting from the same, amounted to "control by market capitalization has been determined after listed firms controlled by governments or foreigners are discounted."

If Australia doesn't need China, why bother trying to break any impasse. If this is all China's fault why bother finding a diplomatic backdoor using less hostile figures for China to talk to? Western countries never think they do anything wrong. They want to hide behind democracy and freedom when it's always their supremacist egos needing to establish who's boss when they find themselves in a weak position being so dependent on China. Greed doesn't care about finding other markets to replace the one they lost. Greed wants it all. They would've already been there if it were available. They chose "unreliable" China first over more reliable countries to sell to...? Remember... this is all about how they're afraid of a future where China does to them what they're doing to China right now.

China's elites learn soon enough to defer to the will of the people; Australia's elites have only to turn the screws of their owned politicians in Canberra, and shit gets done.

Secondly, it's a prerequisite for aspiring politburo committee members to not have assets or even immediate family members outside of China.

Another reason why Indonesia will remained non-aligned: West Papua.

Long as Jakarta thinks there's the slightest American or Australian involvement in West Papuan unrest (doesn't have to fire under the smoke, the Indonesians just have to think there is), Indonesia will keep a healthy distance from the Quad.

Keeping West Papua is probably something that Indonesians of all political groups, religion and ethnicities can agree on.
australia has been involved in west papua insurgency for decades, east timor independence is basically the most successful australian intelligence operation ever
The goal for australia is to prevent indonesia dominating south east asia and unite png and west papua under one country
The leader of West Papuan independence Benny Wenda is based in london now, so you can pretty much guarantee the involvement of five eyes anglos

High level CCP members can't have foreign green cards. But there is no policy precluding their children from seeking education in western universities. Bribes don't have to be monetary. Bribes in forms of admission to premier universities and job placements in banking/finance industry are far more effective and low key. Just check the role Bo's son played in his father's downfall.

But east timor was invaded and annex by the Indonesia. It was formerly colony of Portugal and Never was part of Dutch east Indies that latter become Indonesia So you get it wrong. So they rightly rebel then the Indonesian meted brutal treatment by special commando . Yes Australia has ulterior motive they forced the newly independent east timor to cede oil right in Timor sea
