So the person responsible seems to have mental issues, though the religious staff certainly deserved punishment as they should've known better.

(ECNS) -- A woman who paid to enshrine the memorial tablets of five Japanese war criminals at Xuanzang Temple in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu Province, was detained, Nanjing authorities announced Sunday.
The memorial tablets of the five Japanese war criminals who directly commanded the Nanjing Massacre from late 1937 to early 1938drew public outrage and made a huge stir after a netizen exposed it online.
The memorial tablets are among others housed at the temple since 2018.
Wu Aping confessed she had suffered nightmares after learning of the atrocities Japanese forces, including the five criminals, had committed in Nanjing, according to a preliminary investigation.
Since March 2017, she had visited the hospital three times due to insomnia and anxiety and taken sedatives, the investigation shows.
She had learned that enshrining these memorial tablets could ease her suffering.
At least 300,000 civilians were killed by the Imperial Japanese Army during Nanjing Massacre, which Japan still denies.
According to the Law on the Protection of Heroes and Martyrs, those who publicize and beautify wars and acts of aggression disturb public order and are committing acts that violate public security.
Wu was born in Fujian Province and moved to Nanjing with her parents in 2000. In September 2019, she quit her job as a medical worker and went to serve as a lay Buddhist at a temple on Mount Wutai, Shanxi Province.
The abbot of Xuanzang Temple was dismissed and several religious officials punished following the public outrage.

Seems like the govt is officially supporting the development of domestic cultural products. A big win for the entertainment industry:

It sounds like good news, but the reality is still very grim.
Game practitioners face many problems.
First of all, rampant piracy makes many people think it's reasonable to play games without spending money.

Second, another kind of political correctness also puzzles China's game.
Last year, an internal document(PTT presentation) about the game audit standard was leaked.
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

This PTT document caused widespread panic last year.
——Players cannot play "pirate" ,“assassin”and "thief", which is considered to promote criminal behavior.
——Players are not allowed to make moral choices.
——Plague Inc. and This War Of Mine are the wrong example, because the game can destroy human civilization, or seize the survival materials of others.
——The propaganda of Japanese Bushido must be severely restricted.
——Historical theme Games shall not change historical facts at will, or subvert the image of historical figures that have been finalized. It is not allowed to change the historical process.
——Civilization 6" allows players to destroy "barbarians", which is to promote colonialism.
——Cthulhu elements are considered negative ideas that try to deny man's ability to overcome nature and fate.It completely negates the value of human existence
——No gory elements, under-skirt view allowed.
——Words such as "kill" and "shoot" are not allowed.
——Smoking, drinking, tattooing and adult entertainment are regarded as bad content.
——Getting married and having children in the game will cause serious social and ethical problems.
——Encourage players to cooperate and do not recommend players to compete with each other.
——To strictly examine the theme of doomsday, we must check whether the story is related to the real world, especially China.

This "internal audit standard" is very strict. With this standard, most popular games on the market can be banned. This inevitably leads to the "background" of the game publisher determining whether the review is passed or not, in other words, their closeness to the government and the amount of bribes.

This strict audit standard stems from CPC's view on video games: Games should also be an educational tool, someone sarcastically said: in CPC's view, all Chinese people are minors who need supervision.

Whoever study Nanjing Massacre would lead to mental issue. For example Iris Chang.

Iris Chang suffered a mental breakdown and ordeal not just due to the subject matter she devoted her talent, time, and ultimately life for it from the subject matter that was horrendous beyond scale, which was the Nanjing massacre. Prior to writing her book about the genocide of Nanjing, she had already penned a book on the Chinese lived experience and history of the Chinese people in America. On that book, she learned many discomforting truths that has been brushed aside by her adopted country's history as nothing more than just a blip into the awesomeness of American history. The generations of Chinese Americans have swept aside their bitter history, and experience from a country that from the very beginning never treated them fairly but always with suspicion. The prominent ones or successful ones have repudiated their "Chinese heritage" or watered down their culture because it was deemed backwards, uncouth, and most of all, UNAMERICAN. So the Chinese or the essence of being one has been diluted, and diminished to the point that there are large enough Chinese descent in the western world and elsewhere that have come to loathe their exterior facade; the very external facade was deemed inferior; an identity crisis and inferiority crisis emerged. If only they could have looked a little whiter a.k.a. European then they would have been welcomed and feel more American. The question of marrying into mostly White men exist because of this phenomenon and why most Asian men in the west are deemed unattractive that even their own fellow Asian contemporaries (females) feel obliged to shun them for that very reason.

There are many reasons and causes that may have led and unfortunately contributed to Iris Chang's mental problems. Perhaps the culmination of Cultural examination, identity crisis, and through her research of Chinese history and lived experiences one can surmise that those things may or may not have contributed already to Iris Chang's mental health.

Ironic considering the amount of anime gambling simulators from chinese studios available out there. Which is personally very demoralizing to see.

According to the requirements of this document, such "gambling" games are strictly restricted, but compared with other examination standards that pursue "absolute correctness", this good thing has limited value.

This doesn't strike me as out of the ordinary at all. I remember about decade ago a show on 东方卫视 (Shanghai's official TV station) had three young female hosts discuss lots of raunchy topics including one-night-stands (conclusion: They're great! Just use protection!) Nowadays, you'll never ever or see anything even remotely related to sex on national TV no matter how late the hour. Hell, 20 years ago, Chinese TV even used to have a sort of watershed shed hour after which they'd show movies with mild nudity. Nowadays, no way. Chinese people aren't becoming prudish or conservative so it's obviously coming from above.

That doesn't really sound credible. The trustworthyness of "leaked documents" is low unless it can be collaborated by real examples and government statements.

At a cursory glance there's a lot of semi lewd Chinese game made in the style of Japanese VNs. Or gacha shit like genshin impact which is huge for example.

By and by large, Chinese developers seem to have about the same variety as ones in Japan, in terms of content they can make (as long as it respects the age rating the dev themselves put on it).

The main issue is funding. There's a lot of indie games with decent or even amazing quality but no AAA games because there are no studios large enough to employ huge teams.

The money simply isn't in there. Probably due to Chinese young adults spending more time going outside compared to Western or god forbid Japanese young adults. So the "games" that give cash are not AAA games with 50 hr long story, but shovelware like candy crush which bored ppl will play while on subway while heading out to meet up with others.
