Good article from Zhou Xin about this incoming national disaster. I have never understood why Beijing has never taken serious action to adress this humongous disaster that is upon us like a high speed train without any brakes. We need a very candid and open national discussion about our extremely dire demograhic future. I applaud the province of Anhui for their no nonsense frankness.

This guy is retarded for saying 2/3 child policy didn’t make sense because it didn’t boost the birth rate. When in fact it did just that it wasn’t a big enough boost by itself to offset other factors.

, the experts said a vaguely formulated provision could mean that abortion, if carried out on a large scale, would fall under the crime of “corruption on Earth” which carries the death penalty.

What's the point of being a dictatorship when you can't make sudden u-turns that will be good for your country in the long term? China should ban abortions and contraceptives for a decade or two to fix this massive problem immediately.

So what do you think China's total ideal population ought to be? Any upper limit to the growth ?
Nature tries to control the population growth by introducing famines, plagues, inter species competition etc
But modernity is defined, in part, as the never ending attempt to break free of this hold of nature on humans. In that case, only competition for resources can limit the growth. This competition of resources has been a factor for countless wars in human society over centuries. Empires trying to territorially expand so as to get more arable land, females and natural resources.

So, i ask again, What is the upper limit to the population growth for China? 2 billion? 3 billion ? Should there even be a limit? Or are people here insisting that China grow in population forever? Better draw up plans for territorial conquest and subjugation of others then.

I don't care for dwindling population. I do care for the average age of the population. But the average age can lower by other means, when old age individuals pass away more. But its not fit for a society with ethics/morals/ reverence for the old to do that. The right approach here would be to wait out the old population to pass away and make sure birthrates be a few points short of replacement.

People clamor for population growth but then food security, energy security, arable land, housing etc are not apparently in this calculation. This demand for population growth is pushed by consumerism proponents who equate growth of an economy or country with the ever increasing consumption of products and services.

"More humans are needed for consumption and so humans must reproduce" - or so the logic goes.

If Russia, with its vast landmass ( double the size of China or USA) can exist with a population of 144 million, then China can too exist with a population of 200 million. The Chinese culture will be alive as long as 100 million Chinese are alive.

This thread needs to be aborted with a coat hanger. What's getting written here is literally hurting my brain.

You have to take drastic measures because the one child policy has distorted the psychology of every Chinese citizen's mind into what a normal family should look like. China is a superpower today solely because of its 1.4 billion people. Without it, they will be relegated to Brazil status. Not sure what the upper limit for the population should be, but China should always aim for a minimum of 2.1 fertility rate like every other country.
