the chinese cutters are generally quite under armed. A couple of them have helipad, but I don't think any of them have hangar yet. I could be wrong on this.

I think the ones under maritime police at least have 37 mm naval guns. The other ones are probably just equipped with your machine guns.

I think the ship does have a hanger. Does anyone know what that big thing is hanging off the rear?

The exchange of hearty greetings.

I try non-political as best: The Vietnames uploaded video clips regarding this incident at youtube I believe, it mainly shows that Vietnam patrol boat ramming Chinese patrol boat at the middle section.

From these pics, it seems it is more "exchange of greetings" than one side being purely sitting ducks, that Chinese boat indeed hit back.

I believe this thread do not need more political judgment than any other threads in the forum, so let's stick on more technical side of "China Coast Guard and Patrol vessels" rather than geo-politics.

Alright, the largest MSA ship is launched. Haixun-01 was launched in WC shipyard today. It's considered China's largest, most advanced and most powerful patrol rescue ship. It has displacement of 5418 ton and 128.6 m. It can go faster than 20 knots and has range of 10000 NM.

我国迄今规模最大、装备最先进、综合能力最强的大型巡航救助船“海巡01”28日在武汉下水，有望年内服役。中国将拥有新的执法旗舰船，为维护海洋主权、安全和清洁发挥重要作用。

　　据上海海事局局长徐国毅介绍，“海巡01”是中国第一艘同时具有海事监管和救助功能的大型巡航救助船，将在国家管辖的海域范围内执行海事巡航、安全监管、海上人命搜寻救助、海事取证调查、海上船舶溢油监测和应急处置等任务。

　　武昌船舶重工有限责任公司总经理唐功杰介绍，“海巡01”排水量5418吨，设计总长128.6米，设计航速大于20节，续航能力可达1万海里。可搭载直升机并配合其加油、救生和搜寻等作业。

　　据了解，该轮具有较强的信息收集处理和传输、综合指挥、海事监管、人命救助、遇险船舶拖带、对外消防灭火作业、海面溢油回收能力及夜间搜寻能力，可对遇险船舶实施封舱、堵漏、排水等专业救助，还可对遇险受伤人员进行简易的药物、器械和手术治疗。该轮可同时搭载200名获救人员。

　　交通运输部海事局副局长黄何表示，我国海域辽阔，海上环境复杂，“海巡01”轮的投入使用，将有助于提升我国海事监管装备的水平，有利于维护我国海上交通安全，保护海洋环境，维护国家主权。

　　据悉，“海巡01”由武昌船舶重工有限责任公司负责建造，服役后将由上海海事局管理。(记者万后德、田建军、王贤)

Photo taken on July 28, 2012 shows the lauching ceremony of patrol vessel "Haixun 01" in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province. The patrol vessel is designed to be 128.6 meters long with a tonnage of 5,418 tonnes. The ship will have room to accommodate 200 people rescued at sea and will be equipped with devices to offer basic treatment and surgery to anyone injured. China’s largest maritime inspection vessel, the Haixun 31, will make a historic first visit to the United States during a port call in Honolulu Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
