As I predicted a few days back, China would get over 35 golds. China is also very competitive in race walking. Marathon swimming and karate, boxing.
How about synchronized swimming duet and team events?
How about rock climbing events?

Silver for duet and maybe a medal for team event. Russia has dominated synchronized swimming for decades and it is unbeatable. Olympics rock climbing events are a combined event. China doesn't have any players that are good at a combined event.

This Olympics was so far very impressive for China, not for the medal count but for what it shows China could do if it instituted larger programs with more funding in events where it can clearly be competitive.

China could be competitive with US in swimming, could be a leader in canoeing, rowing, cycling, sailing, and even do very well in boxing and wrestling possibly.

This would give China a phenomenal advantage when it comes to the inevitable last few days of Americans racking up the medal count with running.

If China really chose to, then so it would be.

I totally agree. Also, medal performance is HIGHLY correlated with GDP per capita and Human Development Index.

So imagine, China is already top 2 in the world at only $10K GDP per capita. Just imagine when China gets even richer at $20 or $30K. China will eventually win the most medals and gold medals in the future! China hasn't even hit it's glass ceiling.

They were images of their country's former leader, not images of politics or social actions like kneeling on one knee or the Nazi salute. Hence, I doubt they belong to the banned category. But, obviously, images of separatists or dissidents should not be allowed.

On second thought, giving exceptions could open up more controversies. If the Japs wore badges of their war criminals, the offensive nature would be obvious, and sure many countries would protest, but the IOC would be kept busy resolving the issue, distracting them from their real work. Might as well go with an outright ban.
