What a load of BS.

Su Bingtian didn’t get ANY medal at the 100m event but he is arguably one of the biggest celebrities in China right now.
That's because he wasn't expected to medal and getting into the final was seen an achievement.

You're not going to suggest that all the hateful comments against Chinese athletes who failed to get gold, including those who got silver against Japanese/Taiwanese athletes, were all made up, are you?

Were they directed against the Chinese athletes? There were unfortunately hateful comments directly against Japanese and Taiwanese athletes but I’m not aware of any massive hate comments against Chinese athletes themselves for losing, at least for table tennis/badminton. If you go on Weibo and pick through the comments of course you are gonna find disparaging ones.

One thing the article did nail was the verbal violence against the Chinese femal shooting competitor. Her Weibo did unfortunately get shutdown due to massive hate mail and I commented on it when the news first broke.

The BBC article didn't mention "mass" comments either, so I'm not sure how that's relevant. It just mentioned "nationalists" or even "ultra-nationalists".

Doesn't that lend support to the point being made in the article?

Also the article had the following to say:

"Dr Schneider and other experts noted however, that these angry reactionary nationalists most likely do not represent the Chinese majority.

Dr Hassid said: "If the only voices consistently allowed are the loudest nationalists, we should not be surprised that their voices can dominate online discussion far out of proportion to their actual numbers."

Amid the outrage seen on Weibo, there was also wide support for Team China, with some calling out the trolls for being "unreasonable"."

I don't think the BBC was claiming even a majority of Chinese were attacking Chinese athletes.

Then why bring it up? There are nutcases everywhere. England has plenty too. What is your point again? It's CPC's fault?

Then why make a sensationalist article about a non-issue? Typical BBC tactic of creating bad take article titles then hiding the actual facts in the body of the article where no one will read. Giving them a nice excuse of being "factual" if challenged.

BBC bias as always.

Remember, these are the same people who say anyone who acknowledges that 95% of the Chinese supports the CCP is a CCP bot even if said person is a Mainland Chinese. Takes it from my experience lol.

Well said guys.

@KYli original post was to highlight the bias in the western MSM, and in this case, the BBC.

And is all in the headlines. As we know most people just read the headlines. The headline clearly state, and I quote:

"Tokyo Olympics: Chinese nationalists turn on their athletes"

Now if that headlines is not deliberate, then I'm not a Chinamen. The BBC could have chosen an infinite different amount of headlines, but it decided to gaslight a small section of the over enthusiastic nationalist element to paint a picture to it's readers that this is normal in Chinese society.

In doing so, played down the Chinese achievements. One ought to watch the U.K. coverage of this game. Every time a medal is won. Hysteria and fanfare is the theme of the game. Don't get me wrong, China and any other country is doing the same. But I doubt China is trying to dampen on others people parade.

Yes @vincent is absolutely right. If this is a non-issue as certain member here is now saying. So why the hell do you being it up!

Yes, there are nutjobs everywhere, including England where our member hail from. And during this year's Euro football competition. The vandalism and racists hate is off the richter scale towards the three black players that had missed the penalties. Yet I don't hear the said member here telling everyone about it. It is always anything to do with China, that he tries to gaslight, particularly if it's something bad!

Guys, off topic but what would be good username and profile pic to piss off the anti china crowd?

I recently found out someone from hk been using china virus as username to post on tennis forum. And he got away with it for long time. I set up an account with hk cockroaches as user name and was soon asked to change the name. I complained about that guy and was told he didn't want to change the name so mods changed it to winnie the pooh and the pic was still a virus. Apparently they thought this is OK.

I want to set up a new account. Wats the best name to use. I think cockroach exterminator but not sure if it's gonna be allowed..
Use the name of a well known insecticide/ fumigant used to exterminate cockroaches
