Putin probably believes this is how the West turned Ukraine against Russia so now he's dishing it back.

Two can play this game, after all. To Moscow, Ukraine is simply too close for comfort, so they'll play it hard.

The smartest thing for Russia to do won't be to annex those regions as quickly as would be on Crimea, but perhaps let Kiev played out the neo-Nazi thugs role on TV first, then when the Eastern Ukraine openly bags the Rodina to step in, the Russian Army then move in.

Since neither EU nor the US are committed to throw in anything more than words, yet, they might knock on the Chinese door soon enough, and perhaps with juicy "gifts" to lure China onto their side....though I personally doubt about that, because only a few days ago SecDef put up some pretty strong words against China, and Obama ain't going to visit Beijing this year either.

Two very different narratives running today, with the BC reporting Kievs claims to have retaken the Kharkov Government building in an anti terrorist operation, while RT claims that it is still in Pro Russian hands. RT further reports that many local Police are joining the Protesters and that only Western based forces are still acting for Kiev

The RT report contains a 10 minutes video which is claimed to be the Kharkov declaration of Independence. Its all in Russian so I cannot confirm.

Most of us here at Sinodefence already know the answer to this question, but it is still interesting reporting.

Question: How vital an asset is Ukraine?

Answer: Much more to Russian than to the west.

One sees spectacles like this in the Ukrainian parliament and I get the sinking feeling that Putin is just laughing and waiting for the Ukrainian government to implode so that he can “establish” law and order.

I think he wants to wait until EU and US haves spend a lot of money on these rogues, among other things to pay at least a good part of the account with Gazprom. But you cannot expect them to run a competent government. They have now sent part of their "National Guard", just formed from right wing extremists, to the Eastern provinces. That's asking for a lot of trouble.

You are correct. Sending groups like that to stop the pro Russian element is like trying to put out a fire with petrol. It is just asking for trouble.

Interesting report below (see the attached video):

Not to get off topic, but I wonder how the Russians would feel if Kaliningrad (Kaliningradskaya Oblast) wanted to join with Germany?

Are there any ethic Germans left in the Kaliningrad area?

I just checked Polish and Russian servers and it seems it's going to be a long night in Luhansk (I admit I didn't know where exactly it is:
