That Discovery channel documentary is so wrong, it's plainly voted in by American plane spotters, an inherently dull bunch. They voted the B-52 as the top bomber of all time... it's so pedestrian.

American plane spotters, qualified in kool?????

And I'm not the only one who is bored to tears by the B-52:
Most awesome ever??? "B-52 dull"..Hummph:confused:

Recently I saw a program on the military channel about the top 10 bombers of all time..The B-52 was number one...Vulcan?? Did not make the list..

Now, we all know Planeman as a sometimes funny man..however how can he place the Vulcan #1 and not mention the B-52? Amazing.

Besides the bombing mission to the Falklands and Cold war duty just how many combat missions have the Vulcans flown? Just askin'!

I'm sure you will have a snappy answer. :D

Agreed, bd popeye, and it seems that Planeman takes particular pleasure in taunting crobato over on the Ideal PLAN Sub Thread; you're often not quite sure whether Planeman is just posting an "ideal" sub design, or just playing the funny guy to crobato's straight man:D.

My Top Ten Bombers of all Time (Strategic and Tactical):

1.B-52 (I touched one once, it was an H, but I really liked the D!):)
2.Lancaster
3.Vulcan (Only one combat mission - Falkands 1982 - if you exclude the Double Diamond beer run to Cyprus during the Turkish Invasion in 1974 (unconfirmed):D - IMO, the Vulcan never had the opportunity to really show what it was capable of in its day.
4.Tu-95
5.Mosquito
6.FB/F-111
7.Tornado IDS
8.A-6
9.Buccaneer
10.B-24

well here's mine pick in which-comes-to-mind-first order

1) Bristol Blendheim -Simply becouse it is the first bomber that I have been aware of and thus presents in my mind the arch type of Bomber. Also did good service in our Airforce trougth the wars.

2) Il-2 Sturminovik. One cannot undermind its importance in the Eastern front nor of its novelty to bring Air force really to figth on with land forces.

3) Ju-87 Roughly the same effect on the otherside of the front. Thougth the concept was bit different than in Il-2, the importance and expecially the iconic value is undenyable. Also in 1944 when we stopped the Soviet major invasion attempt, the obsolete Stukas made great effect in the Hands of the German pilots.

4) Vulcan. A plane that ugly cannot by any means bad plane:D

5) Myasishchev M-4 . Great plane who suffered from too big expectations. Would have lot better tool in the medium range club than Badger

6) Tu-16 Badger. Anyone named as "badger" deserves to be in this list:D;)

7) Some few american ones. B-29 undouptly has made its entrance, if not by anyother means than delivering the most horrible blow that ever has been delivered. After all, we shouldnt forget the true purpose of these planes:(. F-117 presents also a great milestone in aviation and bomber devolpment

8) TRS.2 As my great love towards all 'never-wheres' I cannot by pass this ultimate crown jevel of this area. What a pity that it didn't enter service...

9) Il-28. Our only jet bomber....eh...target tug.

10) And finally, the ultimate bomber, the bomber of the bombers, Tu-160. I was rather suprised as no one hasent yet picked this up

Seems like we all have some bias as to which bomber is the greatest of all time...

I know I do:D

No, that aircraft proved a complete flop in active service, being underarmed and too slow.

4) Vulcan. A plane that ugly cannot by any means bad plane:D
You redeem yourself, a wise choice

5) Myasishchev M-4 . Great plane who suffered from too big expectations. Would have lot better tool in the medium range club than Badger
A very cool plane. The intakes are rather like the Vulcan's. I approve.

6) Tu-16 Badger. Anyone named as "badger" deserves to be in this list:D;)

Yes, it would have made the perfect complement to the Vulcan.
